Hey don,

The key switch supplies power to the coil, it has nothing to do with the cranking circit. When you press the start button it supplies power to the solinoid, that in turn activates the starter motor. You can crank the engine even if you dont have power to the coil. Which is what I think you have happening. On the coil it has two small wire under two small nuts with a big wire in the middle going to the distributor. The two small wires are marked with a + and -, The + side should have 12v with the key turned on and 0v with it in the off position. The - Negitive side goes to the points. Check the points for burned, stuck, worn out lob on cam, if you have no spark. If you have spark, you need to address the fuel, Try spraying carburetor cleaner ( not either) into the carburetor to see if it fires then quits, this proves you have a fuel issue.

Make sure your battery is fully charged, and that the ground is a good one.

Hope this helps

How do you replace the selenoid and 15n amp fuse on a Craftsman Lawn Tractor - 19.5 turbo twin

First see start is good, its on under right dash panel to back of motor. Use a ohm meter, check power to solnoid, show 12v on other side with key being turn to start-12v, If not check the wire or two. If 3 wires reground sol. to frame.

Toro/Wheelhorse Tractor wont start

AS YOU HAVE CHANGED ALL OF THESE COMPONENTS TO NO AVAIL IT HAS TO BE A BREAK IN THE WIREING ITSELF, YOU WILL HAVE TO FOLLOW THE WIREING WITH A MULTI METER TO FIND WHERE THE POWER IS LOST.

Hi!!

You may have the positive cable hooked in the wrong side of the starting selenoid or the starter selenoid is defective.

Follow the RED (+) cable from the battery, it goes to the starter selenoid wich has two terminals, change the cable to the other terminal, that should take care of the problem unless the selenoid is stuck on. Replacement runs about $15.

Will not start

clean and tighten all connections from the positive cable all the way to the starter and selenoid connections too and try jumping the selenoid across and see if that kicks the starter over if it does that means the selenoid is bad

John Deere 2010 utility tractor, lights come on dash board, but it wont start. Its in neutral, PTO is okay, seat switch okay

1) Battery condition and clean cable connections
2) Check the voltage & connections at the solenoid
*Is full battery voltage found at the solenoid?
3) Does the small wire that activates the solenoid from the ignition switch/safety switches have voltage when the key is in the start position

a) voltage yes, but it does not start; suspect solenoid
b) voltage no, inspect and check all safety switches for voltage to and from each switch
c) safety switches do NOT have voltage to them: inspect connections on ignition switch and check for voltage coming into the switch from the battery.

I have a1994 ford f-150, battery fine, but it

Very possible that selenoid is bad-did you have starter tested?(auto parts stores do this)Check all cables going to starter for corrosion and loose connection at starter. Corrosion gets inside of cables over time, so replace when in doubt. INSTRUCTIONS-remove negative cable from battery and move away from battery(tie off), on selenoid if fender mounted, remove cables from both sides of selenoid(is stamped with letters B and I)-when you remove, mark with tape which is I and which is B, in case replacement is different from old unit. then remove from fender(save bolts)-install new part on fender, and replace cables on proper sides(B or I). install neg. cable on battery-try to start....good luck!!!

Huskee 25 hp lawn tractor with briggs & stratton motor wont start

Most all manufacturers have the Users Manuel available on line you will need the Make and Model to pick the correct one. Have you replaced the battery. It can show the correct voltage but have no cranking amps. I believe if the solenoid is trying to engage the Dead Man switches are closed. With the starter disconnected from all power sources do the teeth on the starter turn or are they locked up? If they refuse to move do you have an Auto Zone around or another parts store or electrical engine repair store that can test the starter. Make sure the mowing deck is not engaged while you are trying to start the engine. I hope these rudimentary suggestions help.
