Please check with your local building code for this information. Most inspectors will gladly answer your questions if you call them. You may be able to find the codes on local government web site too.

Check the manufactures recommendations as well. They should be in the box that the unit came in.

What do i need to do with my chimney to fit a log burning boiler stove

First, your chimney liner must be clean and intact. Then it will have to be lined with a flexible metal liner, that is the same diameter of the flue pipe coming off the stove, that will connect eventually to the stove. This line will provide the proper draw for the stove, as well as reduce the chance of chimney fires. In addition to the liner, there should be a weather tight chimney termination with a spark guard screen.

Hope this answered your question and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I was just wondering if the EPA pellet stove needs a full chimney on the outside wall or if it is just vented l with a short chimney. It says is has an outdoor air kit. I'm not sure what that intails ...

The approved method of exhaust venting is a full Type L or PL Pipe chimney. The height of which must be a minimum of 3 feet higher the highest roof structure. The outdoor air kit is used to pull fresh combustion air into the system from the outside. The exhaust venting can go horizontally for no more than 2 ft and then must elbow up to what I stated above. OR if you have a single story home, it can go up through the ceiling, through the attic and terminate above the roof. Any time the vent pipe passes thru a combustible surface it must have a fire stop.

Keep in mind, this was just a brief overview of what is required. Each stove manufacturer as it's on guidelines for safe installation that will not only meet EPA Standards, but also your local Building Code Standards and NFPA Standards. Not installing it properly or not having it professionally installed, may void any claim you may have in the future with your homeowners insurance, that resulted as a loss, because of the stove and/or it's installation.

Hope this helps.

When it get's really windy our pilot light get's blown out, we have a mobile home and want to know if the chimney should be raised

That's certainly a possibility, and there are caps/baffles you can add to the top that may divert wind as well.

But are you certain it's wind coming down the pipe? Make sure you don't have any other drafts that are making it into the unit at another location. If it's really windy and you cover the top does the flame still flicker at all? You might want to check that before you put in time and expense on raising the height and/or adding a rain/wind difuser on top... just to make sure. I lived in a mobile home a time or two, and they're notorious for those little gaps and leaks.

Good luck!

When it rains hard and there is a lot of wind the rain gets into the chimney and drips through a ceiling light. Is there a chimney cap that I can buy that will eliminate the problem?

Hello,Yes there is a cap for every size chimney BUT that (while always being a great idea) will only prevent a WASHDOWN & keep pests and leaves out.The celing light conserns me that the roof flashing is leaking near the chimney during wind driven rain.Try a cap it can't hurt & I hope it works.

We have a old house and the gas hot water heater and the central heating unit is vented out an old chimney and the heater is building up condinsation, how do i vent the heating unit out the wall, unstead...

actually if you vent your furnace by code, it would probably be cheaper to have a chimney liner installed up the old masonry chimney. you may be able to buy a kit and do this yourself. any time a new furnace with a draft inducer on it is installed, it must be vented into the proper flu material. if it was vented into your chimney, it may not have be installed by code for your area. you may talk to the instaled if they are still available and maybe that can return and do it correctly. if you leave this vented into your masonry chimney, the acid content of the exhaust will ruin the chimney. a liner will also get rid of the water problem you have.

My chimney is falling down and I want to replace it with a standard galvanized pipe. Is a 6" pipe good enough to run from basement to above roof?

No
the chimney needs to be big enough to carry away combustion products, if the brick chimney has a 10inch square to carry the smoke (100sqin) 28.3sqin for a 6inch round chimney wont do it
needs to withstand combustion heat, mild steel gal wont.
building codes specify what you can use in your region and diameter / house size rules
Selkirk style chimneys sell and are so priced for the reason
