Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Make = Trident exel natural flame gas fire - model fan powered rear flue - 549 RMN FEF +3 The fire ignites and runs normally for about 10 minutes and then the gas side completely cuts out (both the pilot and the main jets). everything else keeps running (lights and fan). Re-starting the fire results in about 2 mins before it cuts out as above, this then repeats no matter how often its re-started. Electricity is fine and gas supply appears to be smooth and fine (Gas central heating / cooker are happily working). This enquiry is for a (female) friend who has virtually no money (my wife does know - lol). I've taken a look at the fire and its clean and no obvious problems. Could the be the thermo-couple? If so where can a spare part be obtained from (if it can). Any help / advice really appreciated

This is a down flow unit. There is no pressure valve on this unit. Here is all the parts on this unit.
1. Manual - reset, when used.
2. Blower and blower motor
3. Relief box also known as a exhaust flue.
4. Gas valve control knob or electric switch, ON/OFF
5. Gas Valve
6. Gas burner
7. Ratting plate
8. Blower door safety switch
9. Blocked vent safeguard tube and switch
10. Gas Manifold
11. Manual limit switch (2)
12.Hot surface ignitor
13. Flame sensor
14. Inducer blower motor
15. Control board with relays and transformer.
That is all the parts. The first thing the heater gets a call from the thermostat to the control board marked W. The board sends 24v to the inducer fan relay which makes and causes the inducer fan to come on now there is a small tube that runs from the inducer fan box to a switch when the switch makes it sends power to the board which proves you have cleared the exhaust flue then the flat surface ignitor starts to glow and then gas valve opens and fires. now if this tube is stopped up the heater will not fire and will lock the unit out. Also if the flue is stopped up with trash it will do the same thing. If you are not familiar with gas heating units you should call a service company out and check out the system there is a lot of things that need to be checked out every heating season as to keep you and your family safe.

terry, I have to agree with you. There's very little out there concerning your model Trident Fire. However, I did locate a company by the name of Trident Systems Fireplaces in the UK. Here is their website link below and their contact information. Hopefully, they can help you.

Check to see if there are no craks in the plastic part of the flame sensor, if that checks out good then check the insulation of the ignitor leads, If that checks out good then looks like the board might need to be replaced. If you have a meter that reads microamps then you can see if the flame sensor is working properly.

Heater will fire, will heat for one hour then shutdown. will get digital read out AGS. can turn heater off, let set for a while turn heater on will heat up for an hour and it will shutdown again.

you didn't indicate exact model but here is what the AGS is for.
Not sure if yours has a combustion blower or not, if so check that it's flow is not obstructed. If it doesn't make sure there are no debries in the flue area. Here is the troubleshooting from their manual. You can download a manual from www.jandy.com
AGS
(automatic gas shut-down)
1. Oscillating pump pressure. 1. Clean filter or identify and repair cause of pump
oscillation.
2. Low gas supply pressure. 2. Identify and repair incorrect supply pipe size or
pipe line blockage.
Refer to qualified service personnel.
3. No flame at burners. 3. Identify and correct loose wiring connections, or
problems with igniter, flame sensor , gas valve, or
ignition control.
Refer to qualified service personnel.

(HVAC) Furnace Not Igniting Quickly

Make sure a back draft in the flue is not happening. Wind can blow it out until the flue heats up. The flame sensor may not be close enough to the burner flame. It may be weak and need to be replaced or if its an optical one it may be dirty and not see the flame very well. Its not wasting much gas but it puts extra wear and tear on the gas controls, is noisy, and, as you said, blows cold drafty air. A gas control system that has issues of any kind is not real safe. It needs to get fixed.
