Propane, LP, or Natural Gas Regulator Problems


There are many questions involving problems with gas regulators. Most any gas fired appliances will have a regulator somewhere in the system to regulate the gas pressure to the appliance. On natural gas the pressure regulator is often outside, but many stoves and ranges still have a pressure regulator at the inlet also.

On LP or Propane appliances there is a pressure regulator at the source but then also at the appliance. On outdoor grills the regulator is the silver round thing at the tank.
They often look like this.

The function of the pressure regulator is to keep the gas pressure even so that the flame does not vary much when the usage is increased or decreased. The regulator does this by using a small spring and diaphragm assembly. The counteracting pressures work to keep the pressure even. The regulator fails when it gets stuck. They are designed intentionally to fail in the safest mode or in a low pressure state rather then a high pressure. Therefore many problems involve not enough gas rather then too much.

On outdoor gas grills the regulator can sometimes get stuck if the tank valve is opened too rapidly. Or it will just become stiff from the outdoor environment. If the regulator is not letting enough gas through, try shutting the valve and then opening it again slowly. This will help sometimes. If that does not help and the valve is sticking, do not try to adjust the regulator. Replace it with a new one. Trying to adjust it could cause serious safety hazards. I have seen some web sites telling people to adjust the regulator by watching the flame…this can be a good way to get yourself and others hurt.

If you have a range, stove, or oven that is not working right because the flame varies as you turn burners on and off or when the oven goes on, then the regulator is at fault. Once again, do not try to adjust this to make it work, replace it and get it adjusted with the proper instruments to make sure that the gas pressure is right for the appliance.

Pressure regulators come in many shapes and sizes. They can look like any one of these here.

Gas appliances work at extremely low gas pressure. Natural gas appliances often run at 4” Water Column. Lp or Propane at around 10” WC. That means that the pressure of the gas will only raise the water in a tube 4” or 10 “. That is NOT much pressure and you can get that much by gently blowing in a tube.

So, if you are having trouble with not getting enough heat or the flame running very low, the pressure regulator should be one of the first places that you look.

Have tank pressure but no regulated pressure


This usually happens when the pressure spring in the regulator breaks, sometimes from overtightening the regulator knob. The way it works is that the amount of pressure you put on the regulator spring (by twisting the knob) will be equal to the pressure on the downstream side of the regulator. When the spring breaks, the pressure on the spring is zero and so is your downstream air pressure. You need to replace the regulator.

I need to replace de fuel presurre sensor in a pontiac montana ,do i have to just replace the sensor ,o the sensor came with the fuel pump?thank you


Replacing the fuel pressure regulator, involves just replacing the regulator at the end of the fuel rail in the engine compartment, but fuel pressure sensor - does this mini-van have a fuel pressure sensor?
replacing the fuel pressure regulator: (1) locate it at the end of the fuel rail in the engine compartment,
(2) relieve fuel system pressure (3) disconnect fuel pressure regulator vacuum line. (4) remove fuel pressure regulator retaining screw (retain for re-use (5) using a shop towel to catch spilled fuel, lift & twist Fuel pressure regulator to remove it from the fuel rail. (6) remove/discard retainer and spacer bracket from the fuel rail. (7) remove fuel pressure regulator from the engine fuel return pipe. (8) remove/discard Fuel Pressure Regulator inlet O-ring (9) Check Fuel Pressure Regulator filter screen for contamination - if contaminated, replace Fuel Pressure Regulator. (10) Lubricate new Fuel Pressure Regulator inlet O-ring with clean engine oil & install onto the Fuel Pressure Regulator inlet. (11) Install the fuel return pipe onto the Fuel Pressure regulator (12) Install new retainer & spacer bracket into the slot on the fuel rail.
(13) Install Fuel Pressure Regulator onto Fuel Rail & tighten Engine Fuel Return Pipe nut to 13 ft-lbs (17 Nm). (14) connect Fuel Pressure Regulator vacuum line, (15) Install Fuel Pressure Regulator attachng screw & tighten to 76 in-lbs (8.5 Nm). (16) Inspect & verify that retainer & spacer bracket is engaged in the slots on the fuel rail. Grasp & pull on the Fuel Pressure Regulator.
to ensure that the Fuel Pressure Regulator is properly seated. (17) inspect for fuel leaks with this
procedure: On 2sec,(holy rollers), off 10sec will be left on, inspect for leaks while running.

Overreving with no power and excessive gas consumption air filter cleaned map sensor replaced fuel pump and filter


usually caused by busted diaphram in fuel pressure regulator allowing fuel to be drawn thru regulator directly to intake manifold. Pull vacuum line off regulator, plug line with golf tee, start car and watch to see if gas comes out of regulator. If yes, turn off car, replace regulator. The regulator sits near the fuel rail on the top of the engine as shown below. I will paste replacement instructions below from autozone.com in case you need to replace the regulator. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Removal & Installation

4.2L Engine

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet resonator.
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the retaining clips at the front of the engine.
  4. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  5. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator and the surrounding area.
  6. Disconnect the fuel return pipe.
  7. Remove the fuel return pipe retainer.
  8. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer.
  9. Remove the fuel pressure regulator.
  10. Inspect the regulator filter screen for contamination. If contaminated, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

To install:
  1. Install the regulator filter.
  2. Install the new O-ring on the fuel pressure regulator.
  3. Lubricate the fuel pressure regulator O-ring with clean engine oil.
  4. Push the fuel pressure regulator into the regulator housing on the fuel rail.
  5. Install the fuel pressure regulator retainer. Tighten the regulator retainer screw to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6. Install the fuel return pipe retainer. Tighten the return pipe retainer screw to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  7. Connect the fuel return pipe.
  8. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Inspect for leaks:
    1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
    2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    3. Turn ON the ignition.
    4. Inspect for fuel leaks.

  11. Install the engine wiring harness into the retaining clips at the front of the engine.
  12. Install the air intake resonator.

I have an older Craftsman Air Compressor and the knob valve to reg the pressure seems to not be working. Can I replace it?


It is getting increasingly more difficult to obtain replacement parts for older compressors. If your regulator failed at a fairly high pressure adjustment, say around 100-120 lbs, you could just leave the old regulator in place and add a regulator when needed to one of the quick connects. Purchase a generic pressure regulator from Lowes and add quick fittings to easily connect the regulator or remove when not needed. You could also just remove the old regulator and work-in a new generic regulator in its place. Generic regulators sell for $20 - $40. Good luck with your repair.

Worked fine previously. Now when turned on the tank pressure comes up normally . However, the regulated pressure gauge reads zero and there is no airflow.


What happens when you twist the regulated pressure knob, as you would to increase the regulated pressure? Does the knob turn? Does it turn until it stops, but still reads zero? If so, it sounds like the regulator pressure spring is broken. That's inside the regulator, and you will probably have to replace the regulator.

CAUTION Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around fuel. Whenever servicing the fuel system, always work in a well ventilated area. Do not allow fuel spray or vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area. Always keep fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage; also, always properly seal fuel containers to avoid the possibility of fire or explosion.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube(s).
  4. Remove any necessary components to access the pressure regulator.
  5. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator.

  1. Remove the pressure regulator from the fuel rail.

To install:
  1. Discard the O-rings on the pressure regulator and replace them with new ones.

  2. Connect the vacuum hose to the regulator.
  3. Install any components removed to access the regulator.

Leaking fuel pressure regulator


Release fuel pressure by removing fuel pump relay and turning engine over to release pressure. Place a rag to catch any fuel under regulator Fuel pressure regulator has a locking clip pry clip off remove vacuum line pull regulator out with twisting motion,replace fuel pressure regulator install clip connect vacuum line install relay. Check for leaks,your done.
