Best solution would be to try it on another computer & if it works there use the windows check disk tool (& maybe the defragmenter) to correct this problem. OR you could transfer the data onto another hard disk, format this one keeping 2-4 partitions and reload your data.

From what you describe, the issue only occurs when the system has not been used for a while. My impression is that the hard disk drive is slow to come up to speed when cold, and this may require a couple of reboots for the drive to get up to speed. Once booted for the day, it will likely continue to work.
Eventually, the drive will get slower and slower and over time stop booting.
Recommendation: Back up any important data and replace the hard drive.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Try plugging into another computer and if that works save all your data then format and try back on your own computer. If this doesnt work start to look into data recovery software. I use 1 called GDB (Get Data Back) which will read a lot of drives information when operating systems wont. Good luck from Scott

It sounds like the controller board on the hard drive itself went out, I had this problem not but a couple days ago on one of mine. I would take it back to the store for an exchange if at all possible.

I have the 1TB wd my book, randomly it isn't recognized on my computer anymore. My computer tells me a problem occurred on hardware installation. I have been using this for 6 months now

The randomness of your problem makes it sound like a power issue. Try plugging it in as the only USB item (if you need to leave the keyboard and the mouse) those are ok. However, don't have speakers, etc.

Also try different USB plugs.

Also, you might want to use a power supply on the drive. If you already have one, can you find one that will give you more amps?

Otherwise, you might try another drive in the case to see if the controllers are working for any drive.

Write back if I can help you further. Also, if this helps, please vote.

Hard Drive not accessible, now not recognised by computer

Do you have another computer you can plug it into? The problem could be with your USB. If it is, see what updates you installed and then removed that may have affected that. You can also go to the manufacturers web site and download the original firmware or updated firmware files.

Plug it into a friend's computer (in the same cables as his main drive) (Turn the system off and pull the plug out first!) Tell us if it works there.

Data loss happens all the time for various reasons. That's why you need to learn how to use a CD burning program to transfer the pictures to CD's. If you don't want to burn often, get yourself a 16GB little flash drive at least.

External Hard Drive No Longer Recognized

hey im the same person who just posted above. i went to WD's website, and it said unplug the hard drive from the computer, and unplug it from the power source. then plug it into the power outlet, wait for it to spin up, then plug it in via USB/Firewire, whatever. it worked for me, so hopefully it will work for you.
