My WD800 external drive sounds like it is not "spinning up" and I hear a constant clicking sound coming from the drive. Is it "toast"?

The drive is toast, that is a common sound from a western digital drive when the heads are banging against the platters.

Click sound in hdd is mainly comes when media is failed. And if so you can't repair it at home. Don't open it otherwise your data and warranty both wipe.

Cant find apacer external hard drive (ITB) on pc but hear the sound when I've just plugged it it

Does the light come on to show you have power at the hard drive? Are all plugs and sockets firmly in place? Have you tried inserting the USB plug into a different socket on the PC? Sometimes USB hubs can give similar problems so try connecting the hard drive directly directly into the computer motherboard and disconnect the hub if any.

Otherwise you could have a dud hard drive.

I am trying to do a back-up from my computer but the external hard drive does not appear on "my computer". when the external drive is connected to the external usb drives it makes a noise.

The cable coming off the hard drive should have two usb plugs. Make sure both are plugged into the computer so that the drive is getting enough power. If it's a laptop you are plugged into the same thing applies but also make sure that the AC Adapter is plugged into the laptop when you plug the external drive into the USB ports. Sometimes it won't power the drive if it's running off battery power.

Of course it could be a problem with the Hard Drive within the enclosure if it is a constant clicking. But it sounds like it could just be the USB port not powering the drive up.

You could try on another pc as well.

The hdd does spin but is not detected

A clicking noise from a hard drive typically indicates that the drive is about to fail or has failed completely. If the drive is still under warranty, contact Western Digital for a replacement drive. If not, you will need to purchase a new hard drive. There are services to recover some of the data off of a failed hard drive, but the rates can be quite high.

Philips external hard drive not recognized by any computer

one of two problems , the interface or the unit , first start by
removing the outer cover to make sure the unit is connected
properly inside , then when connecting make sure you hear
the plug in sound of the USB low to high , a high to low sound
means the there is a problem with either the USB or the cord
second make sure you hear a noise or see a operation light
if so reboot the computer while the unit is plugged in , look
for icon in my computer , make sure you hear a spin up sound
if the unit spins up and down the units motor is malfunctioning
if there is a clicking sound the units heads need replacing if
everything sounds and looks good try taking the HDD out of
its closure set the jumpers to slave and hook it up inside of
a PC to troubleshoot if there is a problem with the closure

you'll need to add it in my computer, as a logical external drive...

and when plugging into usb, recommend plugging in when it's powered down, not when it's active.

It sounds like your external hard drive is physically damaged. Just like an engine in a car, the drive is constantly running, anywhere from 4200 to 7200rpm. When you hear the drive making " sounds ", outside of when you power it up, you should only hear a whir of some sort, and possibly the sound of it writing or reading. You may need data recovery software or services.
