> new MyBook
> it failed

Since it is "defective" and "new", just take it back to where you bought it, and get it repaired/replaced.

Change mybook from one pc to another

You have to install the backup software on the new computer. Either download from WD to use what came with the MyBook. Attach the MyBook and find it in My Computer. If it is not there, you have to reboot and find the attached device. After Windows recognized the drive, the backup software will ask you for a new backup but just decline and reactivate the plan (actions/reactivate). That should do it!

I just bought 2TB my book essential, I thought it would provide an extra drive for my Dell PC, but it just seems to be for storage, can it be used like an additional drive. For example keep a file on it...

The "best" usage for an external disk-drive is to make one more "copy" of all your important files & E-mail & music.

So, if your computer "dies", you still have one copy of your files on the MyBook.
Fix or replace your computer, and copy the files from the MyBook onto the repaired/new computer.

Or, if your MyBook "dies", you still have one copy of your files on your 'C:' drive,
and you can fix/replace your MyBook, and copy your files onto the "revived" MyBook.

How do i use SATA to recover my data from my WD 500 gb mybook? you see my power source is working at all.

You dismantle the case and extract the hard disk. Then you take that disk and you put it in a desktop pc (you will need a SATA dat cable, a SATA power cable and 4 small screws tu secure the disk inside. Once it's installed just start the pc and open My Computer - the disk will be there, copy from it whatever you want.

My wd 1tb mybook no longer powers up-I have archived versions of these files but i would prefer to get the data off this drive

Is it still under warranty?

Possibilities:
* try connecting to a different USB port on your computer
* try connecting to a USB port on a different computer
* try a different USB cable between the computer and the MyBook
* disassemble the casing, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" drive in some desktop computer, to see if the files on the disk-drive are intact

If all else fails, search online for "professional data recovery service" -- a company that will repair the MyBook just long enough to copy all your files onto a new disk-drive. Of course, this is _expensive_.

Note that Western Digital has a Customer Loyalty Program -- knowing the serial-number on your disk-drive, you can buy a new MyBook from their web-site, at a good discount.

I have XP and my WD hard drive will not recognize?

Try a different "data" cable between the computer and the WD unit.

Try connecting the unit to a different computer.
If it still does not work, then either:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, inside the casing, has failed,
* the disk-drive, inside the casing, has failed.

Disassemble the unit, and remove the disk-drive.
Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive to a computer, to see if the disk-drive is OK, i.e., the USB-interface is the problem.

Copy the serial-number of the disk-drive, and use it to "check warranty status" on WD's web-site. If the drive is still under warranty, WD will replace it.
If not under warranty, WD has a "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., buy another MyBook through their web-site, and get about a 20% discount, as a current WD customer.

Dropped the TB from about 2 feet onto the carpet...it lights up, does not open but requires me to remove hardware, it has everything I have ever done in the Army on it, plus pics....I have a 500GB drive as...

Let's try to recover the data because the cost for disaster recovery is unreasonably high, approaching a thousand dollars.
Do not take the drive to any national computer supply stores/chains. The geeks will format the drive, if they get a chance to do so (and tell you to restore from backup).

These steps will not further risk losing your data.

Read Options A and B completely before deciding which to do.

A. This requires opening up the unit.
1. Unplug all cables from the drive.
2. Open the WD World book
3. Re-seat the data and power connectors.
4. Check the connections again. Re-seat the data and power conenctions, again.
5. Carefully re-assemble.
6. It should work, if not do the steps in "B."

B. This does not require opening up the unit:
1. Purchase Avanquest Partition Commander ($50). Other experts may suggest a different or free utility. I trust Partition Commander.
2. Purchase a 500GB (or enough to copy your data) hard drive or another WD My Book, or any other external USB (or eSATA if your computer supports it).
3. Connect the NEW disk and delete all of the partitions. This is the NEW disk or external drive.
Do not create any partitions on it. The "Partition Commander" will do it.
4. Connect the damaged WD Mybook to the computer and boot the computer with the Commander CD.
5. A list of the disks will appear after selecting the default menu selections.
6. If the Mybook does not appear, then this option will not work until the steps in the "A." section above.
7. Copy the Mybook partition to the new hard drive.
8. If unable to do so, then try to browse the Mybook and copy folders to the new hard drive.
9. At this point yu may have to create a new partition on the NEW drive in order to copy your data to it.
10. If this does not work for you, please either do the seteps in "A." above, or explore Partition Commander more.
11. Partition Commander will triple check with you to be sure you do not do any steps that you didn't mean to.
12. Do not format your damaged drive, even after you recover the data. It is your ultimate backup.

I am having a problem copying large mkv files from a WD 2TB mybook to another WD 2TB mybook. they are both formatted to NTSC. I had no problem loading the first drive but the second one is giving me fits!

In order to fix this problem, be sure that the drive is formatted to NTSC. Mine was, however, when I started loading mp3 files to the drive first, it somehow got reformatted to FAT32. I don't know how, but it did. Copy your mkv files FIRST!

No space error

This is due to the file transfer limitations bound by the file format FAT32 (no files larger than 4GB and no folders that contain more than 1000 files). Try formatting the drive to NTFS.
