Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

I can't tell where my danby free standing washer is leaking from!! And it started without warning very recently. Somewhere underneath... Any help with how to pinpoint where the leak is coming from and how to seal it up when I do find where it is? When I turn it over, it's not running so I cant tell. Never done appliance repair before but I can't afford another one and this one works great... 'cept for the leakin'!!! Any advice WELCOMED!!! Please!!!

Hi! Thanks for getting back to me:

    Model is DDW1805W

I can see it leaking when I run it from what looks like a bulbous plastic object. I put a try under there and it catches the drips, but before that I had no idea where it was coming from! I have to get right down on the floor with a flashlight to see it. The thing that is leaking is white plastic --from what I can see. The hoses seem totally dry all the time. And so does the seal around the door. Bt when I poke my head down there I can see abated dripping from-or near-the underneath, from the center(ish) area. I don't know ANYTHING about dishwashers and I bought this one second hand. It wasn't too long ago tho and the lady I bougt it from said Shed never had any problems. I have also not noticed anything until a few days ago.

I am sure we can find out where the leak is. The challenge will be how to fix it.

Please post a full model number of the dishwasher.

Is it any of the ones on this site.

The sources of leak could be - door seal, wash pump or drain pump / drain hose.
If the inlet water hose was leaky then it would leak all the time not just when you run it.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for confirming the model number.

With old dishwashers it is usually the O rings and washers that get dry and start leaking especially if the dishwasher is left unused for longer periods of time.

Your model has a water softener unit as well and the bulbous unit under which you see the water leadk could be the salt container. Alternatively it could be the circulation pump. Considering it starts leaking very soon after you start the cycle then I will for the moment not suspect the drain pump. To give you an idea of the type of components making up the heart of your dishwasher see this diagram. The salt container of the softener is item 33 and the circulation pump is 52/53.

Not all parts may be available anymore but you can get washers and rings which is what is needed if the dishwasher is working alright otherwise.

    see the parts list here.

So unless you are reasonably confident to undo the connections and replace the rings or washers, i would recommend get a techician in. If you choose to open things yourself, I would suggest take photos at each step so that you know how to bring it back together. With softener unit the connections can be quite complicated.

    Hope this helps.

My kenmore washer has just started this week leaking water underneath somewhere!! I noticed water down the side next to the wall & behind the washer. I then placed a few small towels behind & down...

This is either your water pump, inlet valve, or you have a hole at the top of the outer drum. Try using the small load water level, if no leaks try medium. Also try seeing if the hoses are leaking. I also have seen mice bite holes in the drain lines. I hope i have helped you. God bless!

You really must get a service manual. But if you cannot find one, simply open up the inspection hatch, and look for the source of the leak, usually around the Pump, filters etc, often a fitting has come loose... as related locate and repair your leak.

Danby DDW496W Leaking Brand new

Check your hose connections in the back for tightness and sealing (there should be some rubber seals inside the screw-in connections) and if tight and not leaking, you might have a loose clamp inside the unit, or a leaking/damaged hose, or even a defective/leaking pump. If it is brand new and returnable I'd return it for a new one rather than try to fix it...
