Try this, while the computer is off, press and hold the Fn key down then press the power button like turning it on.. it should say diagnostics boot selected. if it passes the test windows would have to be reinstalled. if it fails with error codes 0141, 0142, 0143 or 0146 then the hard drive has to be replaced.

How difficult or advisable is it to try to upgrade an existing Dell laptop? I have one that is probably 5 years old...would like to wipe it clean.

I dont think you can upgrade this particular mode.. Its better if you can get a new computer.. If you need to wipe out everything then you need to reinstall everything like OS and drivers which may take long time.. S0 try this..
Dell has a default partition on the computer and you can install with the same..
If you have windows vista on the computer then tap F8 when the computer turns on and then you will be able to see the advanced boot options.. Select repair my computer.. In the repair my computer screen select the dell factory image restore...
Your computer will go through the installation and it will be up and running...
If you have windows Xp then you have to turn on the computer and when the dell logo appears you have to simultaneously press control and the F11key.. You will be able to reinstall the OS and drivers in this way..

If thi is not available then install OS using the OS disk and then drivers using the drivers disk...

My Dell Inspiron 1545 on Windows 7. After a system restore will not start. You switch on, The Dell logo appears, then the screen stays blank except for the cursor arrow which remains and can be moved...

Power drain your computer, remove all the accessories connected on it, including battery and power cord then press the power button for 1 minute.
Connect the power cord then turn on the computer.

This is a possible Operating system corruption and it needs a complete reloading of your operating system or reformat your HDD and install the OS again.

Dell inspirion 530 Black sreen at boot up with blinking cursor

HI there.
Hit F12 - enter diagnostics - then run them
It should from memory run a test called 'DST' which stands for disk short test. If this passes OK your disk is 99% ok. If OK then (my guess is you have WinXP) boot the XP install disk and attemp to install Windows. If the installer detects a version of windows already on the disk it will ask you "if you wish to repair the copy already installed"
If it does hit yes - ( you wont lose your data however I hope you have backed up)
After it has finished your done.
Hope this helps you out.....Mark

one possibility is your windows xp might be corrupted. Try formatting your system and install a fresh copy of xp. or there might be a problem with your RAM.

My E1705 does finish coming up or turning on.

if the computer is booting up (you see the dell logo and then the windows logo) it could just be that your ram needs to be reseated, its very easy to do but if your not comfortable doing so any computer shop would be able to do it but most likely not for free. if that doesnt do it try to reseat the hard drive and or the wireless cards, any loose components can cause it to freeze, also if you have any USB Devices hooked to the computer during bootup make sure you remove them while troubleshooting. Past that it would be either a mechanical failure in the Harddrive of the computer or possibly failing memory or motherboard. You will need to do extensive troubleshooting to determine that. If you have a waranty with Dell they will walk you through the paces if your not sure what to do next you can ask me as well.

Good luck!

Best Regards,

B.
