I just downloaded a cpu monitor from www.cpuid.com for my wife's gateway.

If you go to their home page and download version 1.48 it should give you the stats for your chipset.
Hope that works for you!

Compaq presario 1630 wont install chipset

Hello,Is this the same version of windows you had installed prior to the reinstall? the 1630 is an older laptop and shipped with small hard drives and preloaded with windows 98. Windows XP is much larger than 98 and therefore using all of your hard drive space. Are you able to go to click "my computer" and click on c drive and see how much disk space is left?

I have an e-machine D730Z..the power is on but doesnt display anything in the monitor. how could i possibly trobuleshoot ds kind of problem?

HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT AN E-MACHINE DISPLAY FAILURE
basically to troubleshoot a display failure on your laptop follow the procedures below.u need a star screw driver to help you take the laptop apart.
1.get to the bottom of the laptop and take off the memory bay cover.clean the metallic side of the memory and insert it back into the memory slot.power on the laptop and check if problem is solved,if not
2.connect your laptop to an external monitor and power on the laptop, if problem persist
3.then there is a likelihood of it being either the video graphic array(VGA) or the bios chip needs an update depending on the processor of your laptop.
4.if your laptop comes with an AMD processor then I'm certain it a VGA problem
5.but if your processor is the INTEL type then you have to flash or update your firmware bios chip via hardware or software.you can either change the bios chip or flash it.
6.a floppy or a pen drive will be needed to make a bootable bios flash software.
7.to solve a VGA problem u need to take it to a professional technician to warm the VGA chipset in order to get contact with the motherboard.better still if you have a hot air device you can take your laptop apart and warm the VGA chipset on the motherboard.afterwards exerting a little pressure with a piece of cloth on the VGA chipset to make it have contact with the motherboard.

HOW MUCH DDR2 MEMORY FOR LAPTOP

Referring to a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 series of Notebook PC:

According to the Service Manual;

1) The Maximum Total Amount of Ram Memory depends on the Northbridge chipset used.
(System Controller. Intel)

If it is an Intel GM965 chipset, the maximum total amount is 4GigaByte. (4GB)
If it is an Intel GL960 chipset, the maximum total amount is 2GB.

Northbridge chipset (Or System Controller)

The Northbridge chipset was aptly named so, because of the general location of the chipset on the motherboard.
It is generally located under the Processor.

(The Southbridge chipset is located further 'South' on the motherboard)

The Northbridge chipset handles the faster capabilities of the computer.
It handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and High-Speed graphics.

High-speed graphics being AGP or PCI-Express.
Integrated Graphics, or a graphics card installed into a PCI slot is NOT high-speed graphics.

This is handled by the Southbridge chipset.
The Southbridge chipset handles the slower capabilities of the computer.

Motherboard diagram;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

Information on the Northbridge (computing),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northbridge_%28computing%29

Information on the Intel GM965, and GL960 chipset,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Core_2_Mobile_chipsets

Look under the heading Chipset at GL960.
Looking across you can see that the chipset supports;

1) DDR2 Sdram that is either 533MegaHertz, or 677MHz. (SO-DIMM ram memory for laptops)
2) Supports up to 3GB

[ Your laptop has TWO ram memory slots. The primary, or Main ram memory slot, (Outside edge), and the Optional ram memory slot, (Inside towards the middle)

There are No 1.5GB ram memory modules. ('Stick')
This is why 2GB is the maximum with the Intel GL960 chipset.

Install one 2GB ram memory module in the Main ram memory compartment,
OR,
Install one 1GB ram memory module, in the main ram memory compartment, and one 1GB ram memory module in the Optional ram memory compartment ]

Now look under the Chipset heading at GM965.
1) Supports DDR2 Sdram at either 533MHz, or 677MHz.
2) Supports up to 4GB.

How to know what Northbridge (System Controller) chipset your laptop uses?
Use CPU-Z from CPUID.com

Information on CPU-Z on Wikipedia,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU-Z

CPU-Z,

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z/versions-history.html

If you need guidance in downloading, installing, and using CPU-Z, hit me up in a Comment.

Download page for the free Service Manual, for the Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 series of Notebook PC's,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-toshiba

Scroll down with your eyes to the heading - Satellite Pro
Go across, and click on - L300

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on - L300 - it may take up to 30 seconds before you will see the first page come up.
It may also take additional time for the file to fully download.

Why does Toshiba satellite a10-S177 have 1gb ram limit? Motherboard? BIOS? Or just that 1GB SODIMMs weren't invented yet?

Motherboard

More specifically the motherboard chipset.

The motherboard chipset is the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.
{In reference to the motherboard chipset technology used for this laptop}

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_circuit

The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.

The Northbridge chip determines what Processors can be used, what Ram Memory can be used, (Plus the amount), and High-speed graphics.

AGP and PCI Express being High-speed graphics.

A graphics card inserted into a PCI expansion slot is not High-speed graphics.
Neither is Integrated Graphics.

The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of a computer.

{CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short}

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

The motherboard chipset for the Toshiba Satellite A10 series of Notebook PC's, is an
Intel 852GMV.
The maximum amount of ram memory supported is 1GB.

I have reinstalled the software on my Inspiron 9100. Everything installs fine until I install either the Intel chipset drivers or XP SP2 or SP3 updates and then after a reboot the screen displays...

Sounds like a problem with the Video Driver...You can always opt out of installing the chipset driver as really the computer can run without it. Does the Dell website have alternative chipset drivers for this model besides the Intel one? If so try it.

How much the memory on compaq v3000z can be increased and what type ddr, ddr2 or ddr3? currently it has 256.

Compaq Presario V V3000 Specification Memory Type: DDR2 SODIMM 200pin DDR SODIMM:
DDR, double data rate is a type of SDRAM in which data is sent on both the rising and falling edges of clock cycles in a data burst. It is usually referred to as DDR as opposed to DDR SDRAM.
SODIMM, small outline dual inline memory module. Smaller and thinner than standard DIMMs, SODIMMs are typically used in laptop computers.
Memory Speed: PC2-4200, PC2-5300 Chipset: Intel 945GM Chipset :
A group of chips that together make up a complete computer processing unit, usually on one circuit board (the motherboard). It may include the main central processor, graphics processors, secondary cache memory, and input-output controllers. Memory is one component controlled by the chipset. Standard Memory: 512MB Removable Memory Slot(s): 2 Max. Memory Per System: 2048MB (2GB) Max. Memory Per Slot: 2048MB (2GB) Dual Channel Memory Support: Supported Dual Channel :
A development in motherboard and chipset design that allows for increased bandwidth transfer when using two or more memory modules in separate transfer channels. These separate channels allow each module access to the memory controller, increasing throughput bandwidth. It is a good idea to use matched pairs of modules to ensure the best compatibility for dual channel operation. Tri-Channel Memory Support: Not Support Tri-Channel :
A development in motherboard and chipset design that allows for increased bandwidth transfer when using three or more memory modules in separate transfer channels. These separate channels allow each module access to the memory controller, increasing throughput bandwidth. It is a good idea to use matched three modules to ensure the best compatibility for tri-channel operation. Install Memory in Pairs: Not Required Install in Pairs :
Memory modules must be installed in pairs of matched memory size. This means that if you purchased your computer with 128 MB of memory installed and you want to add another 512 MB of memory, you must remove the two continuity modules and replace them with two 256-MB memory modules.
