Thanks - that sounds like the solution. Is it possibly related to the yellow blob that has been growing across the screen over the past 8 or nine months, and which also has created a blue haze at the corners of the screen and blue small dots across the screen?

Very quick response, and seems very knowledgeable. The TV model and problem statement were presented, and then a useful solution was presented along with suggestions on how to pursue the solution.

Hi,
Question shows it is Sony KDF-55WF655 tv and if tv turns Off and On again itself that indicates weak lamp that has reached at end of working hours life and need to be replaced to solve tv problem.
Please note that lamp is not dead/ broken yet so confusing protection circuit in tv, dead/ broken lamp will lit lamp light on tv front.
Lamp replacement procedure is easy and written in user manual with details.
Click Sony Support link to download user manual copy, if required.
Required lamp part number for KDF-55WF655 is as follows:
A1085447A ... LAMP BLOCK ASSY XL2200U and available in Sony Accessories Store for $200
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

No, that is another problem related to light engine (optical block) in tv, lamp is light source for that light engine to present its picture on front screen.
Lamp replacement will not solve problem of blue dots, yellowish haze or shades in picture as it is due to defective optical block that will be replaced and it would be a costly fix.
    Thanks.
