SOURCE: Will not back up - says 'Invalid drive specification'

Did you add another drive to that computer? it sounds like the hard drive has taken on a different drive letter and you have a program that has the drive letter specified. check to make sure the drives letter didnt change.

SOURCE: computer doesnt read the external hard drive anymore

It sounds like the hard drive head crashed when you pulled the power plug. Unfortunately if you can't get drive to be recognized, you won't even be able to run any diagnostics. You will have to take the drive to an authorized repair shop who will have to check the electronics to see if the head will respond. Unless you have data on your drive that you absolutely need, you will probably save a lot of money by replacing rather than repairing the drive.

Dell has stated in Dell knowledge base document FA1021802, that a USB device (such as a external hard drives, scanner, printer, etc) may not be detected or function correctly when connected to the USB port of a Dell Latitude or Inspiron PC (it may occur on other models as well).

Various communication errors may occur, including device initialization and device not found errors.
Some Dell computers do not provide enough voltage from the USB ports to power some USB devices.
Dell recommends purchasing a powered USB hub to provide the USB devices with enough power to operate correctly.

I think this explains it. Thank you and good luck!

It is possible that another device grabbed the drive letter that was assigned to your external drive. The links below will help you resign a drive letter if needed.

How to change your drive letter in Windows Vista and Windows 7

How to change your drive letter in Windows XP

If the drive is not showing up in Disk Management then this is a sign that there is a problem with the drive. I would recommend connecting it to another computer to see if it will detect. If it does not then there is a problem with the drive and I would contact the manufacture of the drive do see if you are still in warranty.

Let me know if you have any more problems or quesitons
