Sometimes after being idle for awhile the power light on the printer is on, but it will not print. I have to unplug and plug it back in - then it prints. Is ther ea "time-out setting somewhere that I need to turn off?

It's been my long experience that when HP Printers start doing this it means they have reached a conflict with a Windows update or an HP Update is conflicting with Windows. After years of drivingmyself nuts with attempts at quick fixes, I now simply uninstall and re-install the printer which solves this problem every time i"ve done so.

Selk

My printer is not printing

Without knowing any more, all I can do is take you through a tedious set of steps:
  1. Is it plugged in? Unplug the power cord at both ends, then plug it back in.
  2. Is it connected to your computer? Unplug the cord at both ends, then plug it back in.
  3. Is it turned on? Press the power button. Do any lights change (go on or off, change color, flash, etc.)?
  4. Send a print job to the printer. Does the printer show any signs of realizing it's been asked to print something (an indicator light or something moving inside)?
  5. Open the print queue. Delete all the jobs that are in there. Shut down the printer. Restart the computer. Turn the printer back on. Try printing.
  6. Are you getting error messages?
  7. What happened before it stopped working? Did you install new software? Move anything?

Changed the ink cartridge and now the printer doesn't recognize the computer. It says the printer is idle. What do I do?

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your computer (if USB connected)> reboot your pc > unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer (if USB connected). Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection or when the WiFi light on the printer turns solid green (if WiFi connected.).

If that doesn't help, try the steps below:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable connecting the printer from your computer.
  2. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
  3. Delete the Lexmark print object.
  4. Reboot computer.
  5. Re-brick your printer by pulling out the power supply - black box where the power cord is plugged into on the back of the printer, and re-plug after 30 seconds.
  6. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to the computer.
  7. Wait until your computer fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the list, try to print a document to verify that the problem is fixed.

My c5580 printer lights will flash and the printer window will say tune power off and then back on. and when i turn it back on it will not trun on unless i unplug it and plug back in . then after awhile...

Please remove the cartridges from the printer. Take a dry lint free paper towel and gently wipe the contacts on the back of the cartridge (not the bottom from where ink is present). Wipe the contacts inside the printer (on cartridge carrier). Please snap the cartridges back into the cartridge carrier and please try to print a printer self test.
Good Luck!!!!

Both the orange and the green lights are blinking and printer will not print.

The printer is waiting to receive a document to print. Choose the print command from the software program that you are using.

Wait for the printer to complete the current task.

OR

If the printer continues to blink after several seconds, follow these steps:
    1. Turn the printer off, and then turn it back on.
    2. If it does not turn off, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
    3. Unplug the power cord from the power source. Wait 30 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cord into the back of the printer.
    5. Plug the power cord into the power source.
  • Restart the computer and the printer. Try printing again.
  • Make sure there is a direct connection from the printer to the computer. Remove scanners, switchboxes, and so on.
  • Try another cable.
  • Try connecting the printer to another computer. If the printer prints, then the problem was with the main computer, possibly a software or device conflict

Printer will not print from file

The spooled files are not getting to the printer, do the following in sequence:

Start checking usb cable, test it by using a different one.

Check that no device close to usb can create an electromagnetic disturbance, a power adapter can do this.

Disconnect printer from power, Computer from power (unplug cables form power outlet) and printer from computer for 10 minutes (this will reset printer and get rid of electrostatic charges on PC usb).
Connect everything back and try.

If none of the above worked disconnect printer from usb,
remove printer from 'installed printers' in Windows (or whatever OS you are using)
Reinstall driver from printer disk (printer must remain unplugged).
Plug back printer only when required from printer software or after driver setup.

If it still does not work it may be a problem with heads, Alps are quite peculiar printers, in this case you will need to find a servicemen in your area.
