Select JPG or BMP and COLOR option. If you choose TIFF, you will get only monochrome, not even grey.

NO it is not acceptable. I must apply for a copy of your birth certifcate from your actual place of birth ( ie hospital etc.)

By the law, you have all rights to keep your documents. But avoid losing any of them! The reissuing procedure takes a plenty of time.

You are however advised to read all information on the website of your regional passport office before registering your passport application online.You can access these websites through the home page of passport.gov.in here and choose "Select Passport Office for Home Page" from the drop-down.
Next, go here and click Continue (at the bottom of the screen) to register your passport application online with the respective offices.
After registration, you will be asked you to Open/Save your application form. After Open/Save, you will have to print the application form. If you are not able to print the application form for any reason, you must note down the passport application number. With the help of this application number and date of birth, you can re-print the application form later. Note that you can also print the application if you have Saved the application.
After printing the passport application form, fill up the form and visit your Indian passport office to submit it. You will also have to pay the fee, and submit supporting documents such as date of birth certificate etc., along with the passport application form, on the appointed day and time. The date and time of appointment at your jurisdictional Passport office will be informed by the on-line system and will also be printed on the application form!
You should be at your Regional Passport Office, 15 minutes before the appointed time and Proceed to your respective counter. You can them submit your passport application form, along with all supporting documents and pay the fees.
