Question about Dayton E51 Oil Filled Utility Heater

1 Answer

2E511B torpedo heater would shut down within seconds of being plugged in. Now it immediately trips the shop ground fault interrupter when I plug it in. Have been unable to locate a service facility and not sure how to troubleshoot it.

There are electronic components within heater that may be confusing the ground fault. I would try using a non ground fault plug while troubleshooting unit. These motors tend to fill with debris that could be shorting windings, remove top cover to expose motor and inspect. The motor should turn freely and you should hear slight clicking of pump vanes that supply air to nozzle. If motor is slightly stiff and no vane clicking, most likely too dirty to operate correctly. Heater shuts down when electric eye does not see flame, eye could be dirty or bad. Look for flame immediately after start, if no flame fault could be too little /much fuel, no fuel reaching nozzle due to pick-up tube, old fuel, faulty plug, faulty spark coil, or dirty vane pump that supplies air to nozzle. Heater will not operate correctly with out top cover at least resting in place. Good place for parts is masterheater.com Good luck

Plugged in ana exxternal water heater and none of the breakers flipped but now our plugg ins are not working what coud be the problem

There may be a ground fault interrupter duplex plug in unit that has tripped. They are often placed as the first plug in in a circuit and therefore they protect plug ins "downstream" from the breaker box. It may be located some distance away from your recognized problem plug in. Some of them still work themselves, but still shut off power beyond. There should be a reset button on the unit.

Gfci trips heater not turned on

GFI is Ground Fault Interrupter (or GFCI - Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) It is doing its job, telling you that there is a short in the unit or wiring. Have a certified electrician check the wiring and unit.
