Question about John Deere 22HP VTwin Hydrostatic 42" Riding Mower

1 Answer

I cannot get the tractor to continue running even after I add starting fluid. It runs as long as I add fluid. I bought a fuel filter , pump and hoses. I still can't get the engine to keep running. I even took off the gas tank and drained it. John Hanna Jr, Gallatin, Tennessee 37066

I would take the carburetor apart and soak it in a solvent. It is very common for the fuel passages to become blocked by gasoline which has turned to a shellac type substance over a long winter of sitting idle. If it was running fine earlier this year then that is not the problem, but it sounds like a fuel supply and you have excluded the other possibilities so I would give that a shot anyway.

My 2001 passat some times won't start unless i use starting fluid. Changed air filter and spark plugs.no codes come up its a 2.8 v6

if it only starts when you add starting fluid then you have a fuel problem. the filter could be plugged the fuel pump may need to be replaced you may not have power or ground to run the fuel pump, you may have a bad fuel pump relay. the starting fluid replaces the fuel that the engine is not getting

Out of Diesel

This particular JD engine has an individual fuel pump for each cylinder. The injectors, fuel lines, and pumps are not accessible from outside of the engine. There is a hand primer pump built into the top of the fuel filter. Start by removing the rubber outlet line from the filter base and pump the primer pump until fuel come out of the filter base outlet. Ounce fuel comes out of filter reconnect the line and continue pumping by hand until the pump button feels solid, then crank engine until it starts. This works better if a helper is available to operate the starter while continuing to pump the hand primer. This is normally all that is needed after running out of fuel.

If fuel does not come out of fuel filter base there may foreign material inside of primer pump. Primer pump can be disassembled and cleaned. If fuel comes out of filter, primer pump become feels solid but engine does not start the fuel control rack inside of engine may be sticking in the off position. This may sometimes be overcome by clicking the key switch from off to on rapidly. If not you may have to have your dealer remove the governor cover to free the rack.

be careful with starting fluids, they strip cylinder walls, NOT a good thing. Prime with WD 40 or gasoline. forget the starter fluids. In all likely hood your carb needs cleaning. Pull the fuel line off the carb first though, and crank the engine. If you get good fuel flow, you just have a plugged fuel filter.

Cub Cadet has gas, has spark, has air -still won't start/run

Are you pulling the plug to check for wetness after cranking it a few times, WITHOUT using the starting fluid? Also, I would recommend using carb cleaner in place of the starting fluid. Starting fluid runs the engine VERY hot for a brief time and can possibly damage rings, valves, and aluminum parts.

I have a john deere tractor with a Kawasaki 20HP V-TWIN that will run on starter fluid, but will not start normaly, I replaced all the fuel related items on the engine, including rebuilding the carb,

recheck your jets also check the needle valve seat they swell up and stop fuel flow next replace the solenoid with a short bolt and try that they might sound as they are working but don't

Does a fuel pump continue to pump fuel with ignition on when the fuel line is diconected from fuel filter The car wont start no codes found it has done this a few times this year it runs fine when running...

you have a bad fuel pump it's in the tank and only comes on in these conditions.
1. ignition switch turned to the run position turns on for two seconds.
2. same as above but when engine starts pump continues to run as long as engine runs. and the safety switch for blow out prevention has not been tripped.

Your problem is the fuel pump and fuel sock and the check valve in the pump. only one way to be sure and that's pressure testing. You hook up gage to fuel rail turn the ignition key to the run position look at pressure should read 40 to 50 psi and should hold for 1 minute, if you drop 5 pounds in one minute pump is bad and even if it started they could verify that the check valve is not holding pressure.
This is caused by the life of the pump by using gas with ethonal in it and your car was not designed for it, so it damages the pump and injectors and destroys the filter in the pump.

Won't start

When you put in the starter fluid does it continue to run after you stop spraying it in? It sounds like you have either a bad fuel filter or more likely a bad fuel pump.
