Hi,
You have a problem on vertical deflection. If you have basic knowledge in electronics you can fix it by replacing the electrolytic capacitors (100uf/50v,470uf/50v,47uf/50 )near vertical ic. sometimes these caps becomes leaky.

Picture size

I found the user manual online, and the pictures in it are really helpful and make this make a lot more sense, but:
1. Press [SCREEN MODE], to switch the TV aspect ratio.
2. Press [SCREEN MODE] repeatedly until the normal screen displays.
NOTE: • Some programs may not offer all display mode options.
4:3 Programming
[Sidebar] Sidebar displays a 4:3 picture at its standard 4:3 size. Sidebars will be displayed on the right and left edges of the screen.
[Full] Full displays a 4:3 picture at a 16:9 size, with horizontal elongation necessary to fill the screen.
[Cinema] Cinema displays a 4:3 picture at a 16:9 size, with less horizontal elongation necessary to fill the screen because a little bit of the top and bottom edge of the screen will be cut off.
[Wide] Wide displays the center of the picture as original size and the outer sides of the picture will be elongated. The size of the picture will depend on the original signal.
16:9 Programming
[Full] A picture is displayed at 16:9 size as it is.
[Zoom] Zoom displays a 16:9 picture without changing its horizontal and vertical ratio, at its maximum size.
[Cinema] Cinema displays a 16:9 picture with vertical elongation.
[Expand] Expand displays a 16:9 picture with horizontal elongation

This problem is caused by a defective LCD display. It is a common problem too. The only way to repair it is to replace the LCD display.

I have white horizontal lines about 2 inches at top of my tv

You have some bad grounds on the Vertical IC. In addition to this, in the immediate area of this Vertical IC, are a few bad capacitors. Look for this IC mounted on a large heatsink. It may have seven pins . I cannot remember for sure. I have not worked on this particular TV, so I cannot give you specific locations. But I assure the problem is in this area! If you have some electrical experience you can pull this board out. In this case only the caps need replaced and the IC resoldered. Good Luck and thank you for asking. Images scan set at 300 dpi, end up 72 dpi

It depends on the physical size of the images. Size and resolution are related to each other. Let me explain:
You have an original, say, 2 inches by 2 inches.
You scan it with resolution of 300dpi (dots per inch).
You will get a file that's 600 by 600 pixels, right?
Then you look at it on screen, which has a resolution of 72dpi - if it's displayed without magnification, what size the picture will be? 600 divided by 72 = 8 and 1/3 of an inch, so on screen it will be 8 1/3 by 8 1/3 inches.

So, there's no such thing as a picture file's "real" resolution - we can talk about a resolution at a given size, because it's the horizontal and vertical size in pixels what's "real".

Therefore you have to ask what size the scanned picture is, and then look at the file you receive; in it's properties you will find it's number of pixels horizontally and vertically, and from that you can easily calculate (dividing the height in pixels by the height in inches) the actual resolution the file has been scanned at.
Then you'll know for sure if need to complain to the friend ot not :)

More than likely your akai has defective stk392-040 Convergence chips . it also may have open resistors generally 3.9 ohm flame proff. this board is attached to the top left looking from the back of the set it is screwed on by 1 screw black in the center . after installation this will probably half to be converged dinamically. which means you will half to get to the grid this is done by using the remote press mute 183 quicly to enter numbers on thew remote 2 to adjust red 4 to adjust blue horizonta 6 to adjustred vertical and 8 to adjust red vertical using center button to go up and down
