Question about HP LaserJet CP1518 Printer

Only prints black. Colors are grayscale. Turned on and off. Still only black. Driver is up-to-date.

    I failed to mention I have Macs. Problem unit is a MacBook Pro OS 10.5.



    I could not find a color or grayscale preference for printing. There might not be one.



    But I have isolated the problem to said laptop with wireless printing. My iMac prints color fine (at least the one time I tried it. I use my laptop 90% of the time.) Not on wireless. Direct connection.



    I tried printing the laptop directly without wireless and still didn't work. I will retry when my patience returns. :)



    It had been working fine and quit color suddenly a week or two back. I didn't do anything knowing to change the settings.

    Thanks for the help so far. I'm leaving town for a week and have a zillion of things to do before I leave, so this will have to sit till next week. I'm figuring I'll end up reinstalling the driver.

    Amazing. It fixed itself. My laptop froze up while downloading security and iTunes upgrades. I force quit it. Rebooted, downloaded. Rebooted. And printed expecting black and grayscale and it was color. Go figure. Sometimes these computers drive me crazy.



    Nevertheless, I will release the payment.



    Never did find the color tabs that the HP troubleshoot page suggested.

    It was and it wasn't. I just commented to Rider On Way that it fixed itself when I downloaded what appeared to be unrelated software updates.

Hi,

Have you checked if the Color toner is empty ?
If there toner's have ink, Try this one step before proceeding to another.

Under Control panel -> Open Printers and Faxes or Printers folder

  • Right-click the printer icon for your product, and then click Printing Preferences . The Printing Preferences dialog box opens.
  • Click the Color tab, Check if it is selected as Print in Grayscale, If it is selected, Uncheck it. click Apply , and then click OK .
  • Close the Printing Preferences dialog box
    Try to print

    If this does not solve the problem, you will have to follow the instructions given in the link below as we are not sure what could be the issue.

      If the above step does not resolve the issue, this can be is related a printer driver issue to just one unit that is MacBook Pro OS 10.5, my suggesting would be to uninstall the drivers and reinstall
      Download the latest updated driver from the link below and install it.

    I have a all in one color LC61 printer, do all colors have to be filled to print blk only?


    Greyscale is color not black only.
    You can print in black and it will look grayscale only darker, printers are a pain to work with after a year has gone by, I can expect almost a half hour to print something with my $400 epson because one of the colors is out even though I never printed in the last year a colored page. I take the color cartirges out and they are empty, but I only print a page 2-3 times a year. I use the scanner all the time. Brother and epson have their print heads in the printer not the cartridge so make sure your inks are always have something in it or it will be miricle for the printer to last more than a year. Check colors every other week. One Epson printer only lasted 3 months because I never used it(print head dried up). Never use the set up with tubes running outside printer to small tanks of ink if you only use it occationally.

    My Epson Workforce 1100 suddenly stopped printing black when printing in color. This happens when printing from Microsoft Word, Wordpad, Lightbox (photo manipulation) and Adobe Reader. It prints black...


    normally most printers even like mine an epson NX110 will use color then black when using text but with grayscale only your forcing it to use black ink more and no color ink set in normal mode some color ink does get used ironically but it is normal for it to use color some as it reserves the black ink being used

    I want to print in only black but my printer keeps telling me to install my color cartridge. How can I get my printer to work/print using only the black cartridge


    You can print in only black and white by choosing the grayscale option in the print properties, but you still have to have ink in each of the color cartridges. Even if you are only printing black, the machine will not let you print if any of the colors are out.

    Replace the empty ink cartridge, and then select "grayscale" to print only in black and white.

    In the printing preferences you need to select Black and white.

    1. open the document you want to print
    2. click file
    3. click print
    4. select printer from list, then click on preferences
    5. look around the pages.

    In Color tab I found a print in Grayscale - this setting will print the document in black and white colors, the pages may be diffrent on diffrent printers. look for black and white setting or Grayscale.

    Have you tried Canons FAQ? They suggest checking the grayscale box, which apparently only works with certain kinds of printing (duplexing and borderless will still use colors). I don't understand how colored inks are used to create black, but that's what they claim.     HP Deskjet 450 and HP Color Inkjet cp1160 and cp1700 Series Printers - How to Print with Black Ink Only Follow the instructions below to print with black ink only.
    NOTE: HP Deskjet printers use all the primary colors, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow, to create shades of gray when Print in Grayscale is selected in the printer driver and the Black only option is not available or not selected.
    1. Click Start , Settings , and then Printers . In Microsoft® Windows XP, click Start and then Printers and Faxes .
    2. Right-click the printer icon and in Windows 95/98/Me, select Properties . In Windows NT 4.0, select Document Defaults . In Windows 2000/XP, select Printing Preferences .
    3. Select the Color tab.
    4. Select Print in Grayscale .
    5. Select Black only .
      NOTE: If the Black only option is not available, download the latest printer driver from the HP Web site. Click here to go to the HP Support and Drivers page.
    6. Click OK to save the changes and close the window.
    7. Print the desired document or graphic.
