If your windows xp lost the sound, you probably know that the Motherboard or your sound hardware is completely fine.

So i sugest you to have a backup cd or windows XP recovery partition to restore the system. it is a windows software system failure with Relative causes.

Case contrary, go to the nearest Computer Nerd and ask politely for his help.

you just go to control panel add/remove programm then
Click the "Add/Remove Windows Components" button on the left side of the window to display a list of available components.

Highlight any available component you want to install like sound. If the "Details" button is displayed, click to view sub-components. Check the box next to the "Sub-Components" or "Components to Add" options.

Click the "Next" button to complete the configuration wizard and the "Finish" button to close the Windows Components Wizard

I installed windows xp 7. i lost sound in my hp compaq 6820s pc. What do i do?

Your notebook model does not have windows 7 compatible drivers from HP. Hence,
I recommend you to run windows updates in the notebook which will download the generic drivers. To perform Windows update in your notebook, please follow the web link provided below:

My Built-in sound card was lost!

Go to START / ALL PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES / RUN.

In the command window type compmgnt.msc Under

System Tools click DEVICE MANAGER.

In the Device Manager click Sound, video, and game controllers.

Expand the tree by clicking on the (+) plus sign then select the

name of your sound device. Click Driver, then click Update Driver.

If it fails to update go to Windows Update by clicking

START / ALL PROGRAMS / WINDOWS UPDATE

Let it scan your computer and you'll want hardware under

Optional Updates. Your last choice is to go to the homepage

of your sound device's manufacturer.
