Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

My wife attempted to turn on the right rear burner. The control seemed stuck, so she applied a bit more pressure on the control and then the lights in the control panel went out. Only the 3 remaining burners are operational, all other functions are inoperative. I removed the knob from the stuck burner control and found that the lock nut had loosened and allowed the control assemly to rotate in it's mount. I'm suspecting the loose control may have caused a short and compromised a protective fuse. The range is out of warranty, what should be my next course of action. I do have experience with electrical/mechanical equipment.

Fridgidaire PLES389ECG. It is a range with ceramic top, not a microwave.

From you description it seems that infinite control for a heater element (you mention burner but we believe is electric heater just confirm) you need to be replaced. Yes the reason for that stacking up is the loose contact but not the control must be replaced. However a short in the control switch might have cause some other problems and you need to check the wires to the heater and any other parts that might have been overheated or burned.

Just let us have the brand name and exact model so we have give you some more information to find the parts you might need.

Use a fine grit sandpaper. Don't scrub too hard, you may scrub through the heating element. Take it slow and easy -- may take a while.

I have a GE Profile Spacemaker model JVM1660SB005, maufactured in November 2000. I attempted to change a burned out bulb on the left side. I did not check the manual to see how to remove the bulb, nor...

I regularly see (and repair) this light and / or fan failure on model JVM1660SB005 and most any model of over the range microwave.
The problem is on the controller assembly, which I regularly repair very affordably.

At my Web site, you can get details, plus I have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too.

Top left burner (propane) does not seem to be receiving gas when trying to ignite it with electrical igniter (control knob). However the burner can be lit with a match when the control knob is turned past...

The igniter usually sparks for all burners on the stove at the same time. Usually a little water or gravy, or such has gotten on the little spike that stick up and throws the spark to the burner. If you will take a small brush, like a tooth brush and carefully clean around the little spike it normally starts sparking again. As it is right now, you should be able to see the spark on all the burners whenever you start any of the burners. Check to see on the one that is not lighting, I think you will find that it is not sparking at all right now.

Start button not working

We had this problem and a repairman came and replaced the entire control/display panel. Still had the problem some time after he left. I found that there are several ribbon cables in the back that plug in to the circuit board in the back of the control/display panel. There is a wide ribbon that is close to right rear burner control button, (but on the back side). The connector for this ribbon cable is the trouble. If you unsnap the connector by gently pulling out on it, it will release the ribbon cable - which you then pull out and push back in. Snap the connector back and you might be good to go for awhile. At some point, it will do it again. So, I've loosened the back sheet metal so I can reach over the back - without having to pull the oven away from the wall. I feel, with my finger tips, the wide ribbon cable, (roughly behind the right rear burner button), and press on the right side of the connector after setting the temperature. This, temporarily, enables the Start button. This works for only one time. To make it work for about a month, you have to unsnap, pull out and push back in as described above. I'll do this again when I get tired of my wife calling me to the kitchen to start the oven.
I assume the new parts will have the same problem as the original.
What a pity.

Model #R-3A57 will not operate until light

You'll have to try to adjust the switches. Kind of hit and miss thing. You can usually get at them from taking the grill off the top then take the one screw out of the control panel on top. The you can see the switches where your door hooks go into. Try moving them around a bit. That's about all you can do. They really don't have a lot of adjustment. Hope that helps.

This could be due to a faulty door interlock but in most microwave ovens I have seen the light remains on during the cooking process.

Exploding microwave sounds - No Lights, No Fan, but Heats Okay

We see this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Replacing light bulb

Remove the screws on the bottom of the unit and the panel drops. You can then remove one screw on the actual bulb holder and use plyers to spin it out. Make sure you disconnect the power.

Changing Power level on Westinghouse microwave

If it won't cook at the lower power level then it probably has a stuck relay on the control panel circuit board.

If it were cooking at a low power level, it would be on full power for several seconds, then when the relay opens to turn off cooking, the light gets a bit brighter, and the sound is a bit less.

Then after a few seconds you would hear the relay click on, and a little more buzzing when the magnetron energizes.

Please write back with your brand and model number if you need further help.
