Question about Miele S548 Bagged Canister Vacuum

1 Answer

My Miele S548 does not turn on. I am suspecting power cord contact inside. I am pretty good at disassembling electrical equipments including TVs and laptops. Not being able to open the vacumm canister without service manual really hurting my ego. I took out the obvious 5 screws, The front part is lifting but still have tight resistance toward the back where cord reel is. I think I may have to remove the large power, reeling, "+" and "-" buttons. Does anyone has experience opening the canister? Thanks in advance

Heya,

your exactly right. there is probably 2 or 3 screws your missing there.

now getting to these screws is easy. If you haven't already, remove the top filter and the bag door lid.

Assuming you have taken the screw out holding the black control panel out already... you want to remove the black panel with your on/off switch and the cord rewind. Once you have the panel off there are a couple of screws there that are holding you back. once removed, you should have full access to the underneath with the motor and cord rewinder there.

Good luck,
Mark

Thanks Bartmkh. Just like you said I had to remove black panels out but as one unit and then there were screws I could easily remove. My problem was how to remove the black panels(power, cord, " " "-" ). I thought it had to be removed one by one. If some one try to remove these panels, try to lift the panel as a unit. you may have to jiggle as you lift hard then look for tabs at the bottom of the panel around that hold panels not to come out. Push these tabs hard with a flat screw driver wrapped with piece of cloth ( but be careful not to break the tab) and lift the portion of the panel one by one. It may make terrible noise when you pull them out but the tabs are pretty thick.
Unfortunately, I found that a terminal that hooked to the main PCB board was burned. I need to replace the circuit board. I may have to let this one go.

depending on the extent of the burn, if it is just one terminal, try to re-solder it and see if that will get you some more life out of the unit. I know I have done that in the past and it was worked so far.

Its such a good machine to just toss out because of a small burn.

    Good luck,

    Mark

Thanks bartmkh. With your encouragement, I took another look. To my horror and joy, close inspection of control panel circuit board revealed that the terminal was separated from the PCB board and had no solder around it. The other end of the same terminal was connected to the burnt connector. So it was bad soldering from the manufacture. Since there was hardly any solder on the PCB, more currents ( high " ") flow made the terminal get hotter and hotter and eventually burned the connector. At that point, it just melted away whatever solder left on the terminal. Quick soldering rendered a rejuvenated Miele.

Rickhan,
I would recommend taking it to a Miele dealer and let them repair it. It can get rather tricky trying to put those back together. I speak from experience and I work at a Miele dealer and I leave them for the other repair tech.

I recommend taking your vacuum to a qualified repair person for diagnosis and/ or repairs. Electronic repairs can be fairly reasonable to fix but much more expensive and dangerous if not done properly

Think cleaning lady pulled too hard on cord...now no power, doesn't turn on

it is possible that the cord rewinder has become broken inside the unit. It is a common problem with this and other models by Miele.

There IS a fix to the cord rewind, unless your model falls within the 5 year warranty. In which case contact your nearest Miele dealer for a replacement to the cord rewinder.

Good luck.

I have a Miele silver moon that kept shutting off while using it. I replaced the hose with the new 125-s model but problem came back. It does appear to be a problem with the hose. Any suggestions?

My S558 Red Velvet had the same problem. I disassembled the handle and cleaned the rings and electrical contacts. The problem has not come back.

Have a miele S546 vac. and it won't turn on. Is there a fuse? Can the on/off switch burn out? Thanks.

If you vacuum wont turn on it is most likely the cord winder. This is a pretty big repair, you wouldn't want to attempt it yourself. Most shops should be able to repair the cord winder for about $50-75. If you need a new cord winder expect to pay about $150.

Meile S548. It work turn on expect when I fiddle with retractable cord. Even then, it's prone to stop again. The machine is relatively new and shows no cord wear.

you have a bad cord reel. the cord may look fine but its the contacts inside that have gone bad. i have had some luck with simply adjusting the contacts but probably need to replace the cord reel.

Electrical to power head

Greetings from GoVacuum,

There could be a couple of reasons why you are not getting power to your power brush. The first and most popular reason is the hose of the machine. Sometimes the wires inside of the hose will go bad, causing the power not to get down to the power brush, but the rest of the vacuum working well.

You can test this hose easily. You will need to go out and purchase a continuity tester from Home Depot or Radio Shack. When the electrical test is in the continuity position, remove the hose from the canister, and put one of the testers on one of the electrical prongs that plugs into the canister itself, and put the other tester into socket where hose connects into the wand, you should have continuity on both terminals. It is important that the switch that controls the power brush is turned to the on position. If one of the terminals does not have continuity, you will need to replace the hose itself.

If both terminals have continuity, then you should then follow the same procedures on the electrical wand. If the wand tests ok as well, you may have a loose connection in the power brush.

Please let me know if none of these solutions work for you, I can then shoot a video showing you how to open the power brush to check for loose connections.

You do have a Miele S548, correct?

Please feel free to email me with any questions, I really enjoy sharing my knowledge of fixing and repairing vacuums, and would be delighted to answer any questions you might have.

it sounds like the spring on the cord reel let go. difficult to reinstall. it may have been broken already and that is why it came off. it is rather meticulous trying to work on a cord reel. many can't be disassembled without breaking
