It sounds like you might have a bad gas valve, but it could also be the wiring from the "glow bar" to the gas valve. Conversely, the igniter might not be drawing enough current to turn on the gas. Here's a web page that explains how the system works:
http://www.appliance411.com/faq/gas_range_ignition_systems.shtml
The page also has tips on what to check and how.
If you go to the following site and enter your model number, you will stand a good chance of getting the diagrams and parts lists of your oven:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/
Good luck, and hope this helps.

I have a GE True Temp XL44 oven the stove burners work fine but the oven will not light. When I turn it on the oven, I do not smell any gas. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

could be a problem with the ignitor. take the racks out of the oven. remove bottom panel in oven. remove metal plate covering the flame spreader. the ignitor should now be visible. turn the oven on. the ignitor should begin to glow. if it doesn't glow bright white, or bright glow, ignitor is bad and needs to be changed.

How do you light the pilot light of a GE Spectra Stove XL 44? Top burners and broil work fine.

There is no pilot on most modern appliances that use a gas source for ignition. The burner manifolds in the oven each use a glow bar or electrode type igniter with a gas safety valve to ignite. Both oven manifolds are controlled by the Electronic Oven Control (EOC) board, which is your clock/timer on the control panel. If the surface igniters work and the broiler still works, the problem is not a gas related issue or a control board issue. More than likely, you have a weak or failed oven igniter. Igniters grow weak with age and occasionally need to be replaced. Just because an igniter glows, does not mean it is good. If you are experiencing longer ignition times, or no ignition, this is most likely the case. The following link explains a little theory about these igniters and how to replace one:

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

Prices vary between these sites, so shop and compare. The first three sites listed also offer helpful exploded view diagrams to help you locate and properly identify the parts you need. The part number for the model you have listed is WB2X9154.

If you have any questions please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

We have a Whirlpool AccuBake Gas Range. Yesterday we set the oven to Bake at 350 degress. The Display reflected the word "PreHeat" which it always does when we first start the process of baking. However,...

You will first need to verify if the oven igniter is glowing. When you turn on the oven you should be able to see a glow coming from the oven burner compartment. You may need to remove the oven bottom panel to verify if it is working. If it is not glowing then you will need to verify that there is power going to the igniter wire harness and that the igniter is working(has no cracks and tests good with a ohm meter). If the igniter is glowing then this problem can be caused by a weak hot surface igniter or a defective gas control valve. One thing that you can try(be very careful doing this) is to give the gas control valve a light tap with something hard like a wrench when the oven is turned on,igniter is glowing but the burner is not on. You will need to remove the broiler/storage drawer at the bottom of the oven. Once you pull the drawer out you should see the gas control valve at the back of the range. Try turning on the oven and lightly tapping the valve housing. This may loosen up any debris inside the control valve housing that might be causing the problem. If the oven burner comes on then try completely turning the oven on and back of several times. And when I say completely I mean turn it on after the igniter is not glowing and burner has shut off. This works about 30% of the time. If the burner control valve stick after trying this procedure then it could be the control valve and/or the hot surface igniter defective. The hot surface igniter would need to be disconnected from it's harness and tested with an OHM meter. Most igniters should have a 500 to 700 OHM reading. If you get a reading that is way off then the igniter is defective and replace it. If the igniter tests good then the gas control valve is suspect and replace it. Most appliance parts retailers will test your igniter for free. When the igniter is on it should glow very brightly. If it is dim then that is a sure sign it is bad.

My stove does not light. THe brolier and the burners work fine

Hello, This is going to be a problem with your igniter/glow bar. Over time these get old and although you may see it glowing iit still may be bad. Your igniter should glow a brillient yellow and should ignite the gas within 15 seconds of the valve opening.

here is a link showing pictures of typical igniters.

If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to comment again...Good Luck! Mike

Kenmore Oven not working

Remove the bottom panel from inside the stove. Turn on the stove and see if the igniter glows bright red. If not glowing, replace the igniter. In some cases, even if the igniter is glowing, the resistance may not be low enough to turn on the gas valve. In either case the igniter has probably gone bad. ($50.00 to $90.00 for igniter)
