Question about Panasonic DMR-EH57 HDD Recorder Player

2 Answers

I have DMR-EH57. I have just opened a new pack DVD -R discs and the recorder will not recognise any of these discs - it tells me to "insert a valid disc". I have brand new DVD +R discs also which the recorder asks me to format but does not complete the formatting of any of these either - it says "formatting could not be completed"

I have successfully used both DVD-R and DVD R on this unit in the past - the unit formatted both types and I was able to record onto both types of disc so I don't accept your comment that "only RW can and should be formatted". The manual also states that DVD-R and DVD R can be used on this machine. The unit still plays pre-recorded DVDs without problems. It is not clear what you are saying - do you mean that the optical unit is defective if it doesn't recognise ANY discs?

Ok - so based on what I originally wrote which is that the unit simply doesn't recognise DVD-R discs but tries to format DVD+R (but can't complete the operation), you think the optical unit needs to be replaced? The unit is only two years old and I have used it only a few times to copy on to DVD discs.

Ok - thanks. One last question - is it possible to clean the optical unit or does it have to be replaced?

OK thanks. One last question - can the optical unit be cleaned or does it have to be replaced?

  • russianz Nov 11, 2010

Azraelsri initialy wrote the unit can only format RW discs which I know for a fact is incorrect as the unit forces you to format DVD+R discs which I have done successfully in the past. He also wrote the optic unit is defective but the unit still plays pre-recorded DVDs (including ones I've made on the unit) without problems. Therefore I would like a second opinion on this problem.

Thanks Greg. I actually fixed the problem myself a few days after posting the question on the net and not getting a satisfactory solution. I thought about the logic of it all - why the unit could read DVDs but not format DVDs as it had done only a month or so early. I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner but I did a bit of research on the net about discs that can clean the optic lens, went out and bought one (NZ$25), ran it through the unit and voila! it now works fine again. So for anyone reading this I suggest if you have optic lens problems the first thing you should try is cleaning the lens - it is recommended you clean the things after every 50 hours of playing. Thank you experts - you did help; I am ignorant about these machines and you correctly pinpointed the optic lens as the problem

The solutions offered partly helped - I solved the problem myself based on information the experts supplied

Noone has second opinioned for you?Okay, here you go.If it still reads DVD's at all,the optical eye is NOT shot, you seem to know that also.Try formatting one of the discs on your PC.If it formats there, try recording on your DVD.If it doesn't record, try reformat with your DVD.If it does record, your DVD formatter may have a problem, also if it doesn't record and reformat.Still with me?The formatting and recording funtions are like a software program for a PC,only they are contained within a chip(IC=integrated circuit but trade name is just a chip). If you can format with a PC and record still, you may just want to do that until there are big problems because it would likely cost $70+ to repair, even at a conservative estimate.I will watch to see what happened tomorrow, just comment and I will get an autolink.Good luck,Greg

You are quite fortunate.Cleaning the lens very rarely works so I don't usually recommend it.I'm glad it worked for you.Repairs can add up quick.I will keep that in mind.Although, the fact that it detected the DVD meant it was good,so I guess that is a sign of needing cleaning.I haven't seen it work in such a long time that I kind of forgot about what the symptoms would be.There it is.Thank you for thanking me,lol, and a symptom of a dirty lens, for real.Greg

Only RW can and should be formated. If you get this message when you are using R disks then the optical unit is defective - it can't no longer recognize the disks you inserted. The optical unit can be replaced with a standard pc IDE one, just that to perform this operation you need at least a basic knowledge of electronics - you have dismantled at least a desktop pc and you know how the cable are plugged and where. If you don't have that knowledge then it's time to take the unit to a repair shop.

Yes, they can be used in your unit, but R disks can't be formated - their ISO file system doesn't allow that. The R disks are burned directly. The recorder should be aware of that simply by reading the info track located at the beginning of the disk.

If the unit can't identify the disk correctly then either the optical unit is incapable of reading the information or (much more rarely) the control board can't decode correctly the information so the disk is wrongly identified. In that case the recorder is pretty much dead - the only way to fix that is to replace the entire board and that will cost as much as a new unit.

Yes, when the unit no longer recognizes the disks you put in it's usually the fault of the optical unit itself - the lens gets covered by a fine layer of dust and the signal reflected by the disk gets lost or corrupted. But, if you're unlucky , it's the fault of the processor on the control board - it no longer is capable of correctly processing the identification data that the disk carries in it. In that case, as i said, the unit is dead.

DVD-RW discs are ideal for temporary video recording and data backup, but they are not recommended for successful finalising, as there is no guarantee that the disc will work in another device.

Have you tried using DVD-R discs? these CAN be recorded in video mode AND finalised for compatible playback in other players. I assume the DMR-ES30V is a DVD/VCR combo unit - if so, the DVD recorder will not recognise RW discs; only DVD-RAM and DVD-R.

DVD-R discs are recommended for video recording and finalising in this model. (later model Panasonic DVD recorders allow RW disc recording).

Panasonic DMR EH57 bought brand new in Cyprus, only plays European region. Need to unlock it.

For this model, you cannot play DVD-Video if their region number does not include “1” or
“ALL”. Refer to the disc’s jacket for more information
