An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files.
For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge guarantee".

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

SimpleTech 250 gig external drive not recognized on MacBook

It could be formatted in a different manner. See if it is detected by your mac. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and see if your hard drive is shown there. If it is, then the formatting of your hard drive is not compatible and you will need to reformat to be able to use it on a mac.

Runs but won't connect.--to mac book pro-

Make sure that the drive was not formatted with NTFS. If you are using the drive with Mac, ideally it needs to be loaded with some variant of HFS or FAT. Run the Mac disk utility and scan the drive, you may be able to see it even if you can't mount the drive do a repair. If you have nothing on the drive, you may want to format it on the Mac itself.

Lost instruction booklet fo simpletech 250 ex hd

The drive is USB. To access the drive, plug it into a USB port of the computer.
The drive should be recognized by the computer.
I am not sure about Simpletech, however, most drives do not have an "instruction book".

Reformatted without downloading software to my desktop

robilynn -

Here is the driver page, you'll have to get the model number off of the drive to download the proper one:

http://www.simpletech.com/support/support_downloads.php

Here is the page for the manuals (top of the page), just choose Pro or Duo pro for whichever is the drive you have:

http://www.simpletech.com/support/guides.php

That should give you everything you need to get it back up and running.

Simpletech 500 GB external hard drive - unresponsive

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.
