There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". Some include trying to use of a 4GB SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Others include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.

My camera is saying card protected. So when it says that i can't take or delete pictures. So how can i take that off?

SD card have a switch on the side for write protection. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

Cannot unlock pentax optio x despite following manual guide....help!

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If that doesn't work, try a different card.

My nikkon camera is saying memory card is write protected when it is on unlock. PLEASE HELP.

Try the card in a different camera, and try a different card in your camera, to try to isolate the problem.

Locking of an SD card is by the little plastic slide which operates a switch in the camera itself. The slide must be present in the "unlock" position, to operate the switch, to allow writing to the card; therefore if the slide is missing, the camera considers the card locked.

Inserted 4 GB memory card. new camera trying to take a pic and I keep getting the message card protected.

Memory cards particularly SD or SDHC have an option to protect the files from accidentally deletion. This is done by moving the small part of the memory card to the 'lock or unlock' position. Try to look for this small switch on the side of your memory card.

Cannot unlock protected card

There should be a metal tab on the memory card.Pull out the card. The tab slides back and forth. One way is locked, the other is unlocked.Slide the tab to the other position than it is in now.You should be all set.Good luck,Greg

It comes up memory card is write protected. What does that mean?

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, write-protecting it. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card, enabling write.

If the switch is already in the unlock position, slide it fully the other way and then back again. If that doesn't work, try a different card.

My daughter has a vivicam 5022 and when i put the memory card into it, it says card locked and wont take any pictures how do i unlock the card?

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position nearest the contacts enables writing, the opposite position protects or locks it. Try sliding it fully to the locked position and then fully to the unlocked position. If that doesn't work, try a different card.

Protected card- when I turn my camera on- it comes up and says Protected Card and will not let me take or delete pictures.

Try removing the memory card and move the small locking switch on the side of the card to the opposite position from where it is. That should remove the protection on the SD card and allow it to record etc.

Locked Card

Take the memory card out of the camera. Look at it carefully and you will seea small tab. Move the tab from the locked position to the unlocked position. Re-install the memory card into the camera and then you're done.
