How old is this machine? There are several small plastic tabs that make the agitator work and these break after time and have to be replaced. They are cheap and the repair should not be expensive if this is the case. This is the first place I would look. If you can spin it by hand and there is not much resistance that would be a good clue. I assume the motor is fine and it spins and pumps normaly? You might want to get the motor coupling replaced at the same time because they usually last about the same amount of time. This too is an easy and somewhat inexpensive repair.

.Remove the agitator center cap by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap.
2.If the agitator is equipped with an inner cap with a handle, remove this as well by pulling straight up.
3.Remove the center bolt of the agitator. You will have either a 7/16" hex bolt or a recessed square plastic nut. If you have the square recessed type, use a 3/8" to ½" ratchet adapter to remove.
4.Remove the agitator by grasping the bottom flange and carefully pulling straight up. Try to keep all the parts assembled while doing this, so do not pull too hard. This will make this repair much easier.
5.Place your hand over the top of the agitator and separate the upper portion of the agitator from the lower portion and turn the top half over in your hand. The agitator dog assembly will come out in your hand.
6.With the agitator dog assembly in your hand, lay the rest of the agitator aside. Pay careful attention to how the dogs are installed. Remove the worn dogs and reinstall new ones. It's that simple.
7.With all the dogs replaced and the assembly still in your hand, place the upper part of the agitator over the top of it, upside down, ensuring the inner assembly tabs align correctly.
8.Now keep your hand over the agitator top to hold all the pieces together and turn the entire assembly over (upright position).
9.Carefully align and reinsert the upper portion of the agitator to the lower portion. Again, making sure the two pieces align correctly.
10.Place the entire agitator assembly back on the gearcase shaft and reinstall center nut. NOTE: DO NOT over tighten the nut, or the agitator will not spin correctly. Just make the nut snug. Reinstall center cap and inner cap (if equipped).

These instructions should give you the basics on how to perform this repair. Since there are various agitator types in use by Whirlpool and Kenmore, assembly can vary.

Thanks for ur response. I pulled the agitator cap off of the top and sure enough I saw right away the teeth inside the agitator and how the dogs grip those teeth as it agitates. It made so much since. Anyway the dogs were worn out. Very simple job to fix at home. I found an app. store here and bought the dogs and an "O" Ring for the cap. Thanks so much...I saved so much money.

Will not spin or agitate

All functions operate normally except the machine will not agitate.

The agitator is driven by a couple of different methods. The first is the agitator is splined and slips onto the matching splines of the agitator shaft from the transmission. The second is the use of a bell coupling which is splined to the agitator shaft as well and the agitator snaps onto the coupling. If the agitator does not agitate, first remove the agitator and watch the agitator shaft to see if it is working properly. This wil require a small load setting of water and the machine set to run. If the agitator shaft is working properly, it is either the splines on the agitator or the bell coupling that is defective. If the agitator shaft does not work properly, the problem is in the transmission.

I have an kenmore elite top loader washer model 110 27087602. During the spin it makes loud clunking noise. I seen the other post about the agittor nut sometimes loose but I do not see this nut under the...

Hello,

The most probable thing that is making that noise is a broken motor coupler if it drains but the tub doesn't move or even if the agitator doesn't move (espically the lower section) on the wash cycle the coupler is the problem. I have included a youtube video that will show you step by step how to replace the coupler http://youtu.be/9K1KHEogf3c
If it does agitate let me know and ill tell you how to completly remove the agitator to check that drive block you refer to as nut under softner dispenser

Hope this helps and if it does please give me 4 thumbs up

Will not agitate

Hi,
Since the agitator is connected to the timer I think you may have a bad timer, or control board. If the pump is not starting then it sounds like it is siphoning out. Raise your drain stand pipe, and if it is already raised enough, get a anti-siphon devise to attach the drain hose to the stand pipe. If the tub doesn’t fill to the proper level, it will not go into the wash cycle hence there will not be any agitation.
Let us know if you want any further clarification.

Old model rca washer machine...will not agitate/wash the clothes, does spin.

If the washer fills up with water and you hear the motor running but the agitator doesn’t move, the agitator coupling is the most likely problem. First pump the water out by turning the timer to spin. Once the water is out, turn the washer off. Now pull up on the agitator until it comes off (it may be hard to pull off). Now that the agitator is off, you can see the agitator coupling, reach down and try to turn the coupling. If the coupling turns freely, it is striped out and needs to be replaced.
