Tape mechanism problems can be quite complicated but they can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be diagnosed by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

I have a JVC mini DV digital Video camera model No. GR-D295U that was lost for almost 5 years and we found it. The camera had a tape inside and we can see it but the sound like jumps, is anyway that I can...

The battery is very likely BAD (has high internal resistance)! Can you take the battery OUT, and run with ONLY the charge cable attached? Does that make any difference in performance?

White wide lines go across the screen when played back. How do you fix this? There is also a black dot in the middle of the screen.

It is hard to make a complete judgement without additional information. If you get a brand new tape and record something right now and then immediately play it back, does it have the same effect you describe as an old tape? It's possible that it's one tape that's the problem. It is also possible that the tape heads are dirty. Try this......get a special cleaning cassette tape and follow the mfg. instructions for using. What ever it says, do it twice. If it fixes it, great. If not try the same tape in another machine. If it still plays fine elsewhere but not in your's, you probably have an electronic problem and that means shop time. Two more tricks you can apply before the home brew methods dry up is to reset the motherboard and clean the electrical fingers that connect to the cassette.
CLEAN: Remove the present cassette from the camera body but slowly because you are looking for 4 notches on the edge of the cassette shell. Then you MUST remove your battery. When the cassette is out, look for the very thin 4 wires that are in the camera in the same area of the shell notches. They are a bit hard to see so be patient. When you locate them, take a Q-tip and drench in Isopropal Alcohol. VERY CAREFULLY wipe each wire without bending or distorting. Wait 5 minutes to dry. Put the battery back in and then the cassette.
RESET: Take the battery out. Turn on your camera to playback mode. Find the little reset button on the body of the camera. Hold that in with a ballpoint pen and hold in the record button at the same time for 10 seconds. This resets your motherboard to default settings and messes up your time and date. Perhaps a few other settings you changed when you setup your camera.
After trying all of the above, if your still in the same mess, the cheap fixes are probably not going to help. Good Luck!

I have a Canon ZR90A and started noticing horizontal gray lines displaying across the screen when it plays back. What is causing this?

The most common cause of horizontal lines during playback is dirty heads/tape path. If you have a head cleaner tape, try playing it for about 5 to 10 seconds and then try your tape again. Repeat as necessary. Try not to run the head cleaner for long periods of time because you may wear down your heads quicker (cleaning cassette is somewhat abrasive). If you do not own a head cleaning tape, I highly recommend purchasing one. Sony (in my opinion) makes the best miniDV head cleaning cassette. We use this brand in our repair shop and they last for years. I have posted a link to the particular tape I am speaking of. Your local camera/camcorder shop may have these for sale.

How do you get a tape out that is stuck

Probalby the only way to get stucked tape out of a player is in pieces. Then repair the cassette and clean your player. If it keep stcking tapes, dispose it.
By the way, cassette tapes an players are rather obsoleteby now. Any digital source is better quality the a cassette.

Viewer gets lines in it and that tells it needs cleaning. It has not been usesd alot and I need to use it

You can purchase a head cleaning tape. These work vert well. You just put the cassette into your camera like you would a regular tape cassette, then play it for ten sconds only. Don 't rewind. You can keep using it in ten second bursts uintil the problem is solved. If the problem is not solved in this way, your camera probably needs a new video head. This worked for my Sony Handycam and I can't see why it wouldn't work for a Panasonic.

Panasonic dv camcorder keep havin

This error indicates a cassette mechanism malfunction.
It happens usually when you don't operate the camecorder for long time leaving the cassette inside and the battery attached.
Solution:
1.
Open the cassette housing and nock GENTLY with your finger tip
on the cassette cabinet (particularly on the position marked "push") until
the cassette is released.
2.
Push on the right place (marked "push") to close and then close the
cassette housing.
3.
Operate the cassette (play, fast forward/backward).
Repeat the above steps several times until the problem is gone.
Advise: Remove the battery and cassette when leaving the camecorder for long period without being operated, and store the camcorder in a dust/humidity protected place.
Hope this can help.

Camera cassette errors

Often in this situation there are two issues that can casue the problem you are having. 1. The tape is casuing the camera to "reject" it. In other words, it thinks there is something wrong with the tape so it is warning you with the error message. Perhaps the cassette has been damaged slightly. This error can also happen when the tape has been used often or taped over a few times. Solution: Try using a new tape. 2. The camera may need to be cleaned. The recording heads may be dirty and it doesn't matter what tape is placed in there. Purchase a cleaning tape from a consumer electronics store. Make sure you read the directions very carefully. These are cheap fixes. If it works, great. Otherwise it may need to be serviced by your local technician. Let me know how it goes.
