An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files.
For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge guarantee".

How to access my Buffalo HD-PNTU3 external hard drive?

dropping it while turned on is fatal as it usually damages the write heads and/or the platters.
if it hit the floor, changes are it's physically damaged the mechanism.
recovering data from a drive with this damage is not cheap as you will have to send it away to be rebuilt. It's impossible to rebuild it yourself.

Power cables located near the wireless router can cause dropouts and speed reduction. 7. Fish tanks will cause massive Wi-Fi shadow on the other side of the tank from the wireless router. 8. Depending upon the location of large mirrors will reflect wireless signal away your computer. 9. HI guys, I found a solution to a similar problem with the buffalo portable HDD that I brought from my friend. I just changed the HDD cable with the cable from Western Digital My Passport HDD and all problems were sorted out. Physically the WD cable is bit thicker than the Buffalo HDD cable. So suspect the cable is the problem. Please check if this is the problem with your Buffalo HDD before formatting. All the best

Sounds like the drive might be taking a dirt nap.
You've a lot of really great freeware options for file recovery if you're running Windows. Notable apps include Undelete Plus (original post), PC Inspector File Recovery (original post), and Restoration (original post). Undelete Plus is the most user-friendly option of the bunch, with advanced filtering options that make it easy to find your needle of a file among the haystack of deleted garbage, but in my tests I found both Restoration and PC Inspector File Recovery to be more effective at recovering files. (Of course, your mileage may vary.) As an added bonus, the bare bones Restoration is portable, which makes it an excellent addition to your thumb drive.

recording from an external hard-disk to a DMR Dear Sir or Madam, I have just purchased the DMR-BST835EG Blu-Ray Recorder, which has many attractive features. In fact, I also recommended this product to a friend of mine. My prime intention is to transfer some Internet downloaded .MKV-HD and .MP4-HD movies, presently stored on a Buffalo USB-powered external hard-disk, onto the Panasonic recorder's internal (1TB) hard-disk. However, after registering the said USB-HDD on the DMR, its driver is no longer recognized on my computer...and it has to be re-formatted via the PC, with the result that the Blu-Ray recorder again refuses to copy video files from it. What can I do? This article (the DMR) was purchased, for over EUR 600, from EBay, mainly for the above-stated purpose, repeat: copying the HD films, presently kept on external hard-disks, onto the Panasonic recorder (so as to transfer the files onto Blu-Ray discs later on). Please treat as urgent, as I would like to start using the Panasonic article accordingly, and my friend also needs this information before buying the DMR-BST835EG (too). I earnestly await your reply. Thanks in anticipation for your time and attention. Best regards, Ivan Micallef P.S.: Is there some firmware update which could enable the USB-HDD >> HDD (1 Terabyte) recording ? This is an option which should be possible, also according to the DMR's "Copy Video" menu. ; According to various website blogs, many other clients are facing the same problem - what we are askingfor is for the elimination of the USB-HDD registration request. ; Preferably, the external hard-disk accepted/recognized by the Panasonic DMR should remain in the NTFS format and not changed to the FAT32 system. Thanks again.
