I changed clicks and relays but wires at the compressor burned,only fan runs but compressor still cant start,whats wrong and where is the thermostat?

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

Your problem is not your thermostat. In some models the compressor knocks out the overload relay. They relay could last a few seconds or a few weeks before the compressor knocks it out again. This is especially turn with the LG units.

You will need a multi-meter to check your compressor.

1.) Unplug your unit. Remove the bottom back cover.

2.) Remove the overload components to expose the 3 pins on the compressor.

3.) Inspect the pins on the compressor. Are they clean or are they damaged from heat (Steel melting).

4.) With your multi-meter, set the meter on the lowest Ohms. Read the Ohms between each of the pins. You will have 3 readings. One reading will be high and the other 2 readings will be lower. Add the 2 lower readings together. This value must equal the high reading within a few tenths.

I hope I am wrong. A new compressor depending on the model is $275-$450.00. Include a system filter for $40.00, plus new refrigerant $45.00 and the cost od an experienced technician $300.00.

My bottom freezer amana refrigerator is making a clicking noise. And my freezer is barely cold.

Refrigerator making clicking noise compressor not running.

The clicking could be the start relay.If the start relay is bad, the compressor will not start and you will hear a clicking noise in 2-5 minute intervals. The clicking noise is the overload cutting the compressor off when it overheats from trying to start with a bad start relay. To find out if this is bad first unplug the refrigerator. Remove the lower cover from your refrigerator. Then take the cover off that is on the side of the compressor,you will see wires going to this. Now you should be able to see the start relay plugged on to the side of the compressor and unplug it. Now the best way to tell if it's bad is to shake it. If it rattles, it's bad and needs to be replaced. If not, most of the time it's ok. But rather than saying the compressors bad, you might want to replace it anyways because it does not cost much. A quick check on the compressor is to remove the start relay. You will see 3 pins connect a multi meter set for continuity. You should have continuity between any of the 3 pins. If you do not the compressor is bad. Also check from each pin to a good ground on the cabinet. There should be no continuity if there is the compressor is bad. If you replace it and it doesn't work then the compressor is bad and you'll need to call a repairman. (Note that compressors are very costly and are normally not worth fixing).You can enter your model # at Refrigerator clicking for diagrams and illustrations or to purchase a start relay. A 3 in 1 start relay will also work fine.

My copressor won't start. relay works fine in

HAVE YOU TRY A 3-N-1 COMPRESSOR BOOSTER|? YOUR LOCAL APPLIANCE PARTS STORE SHOULD HAVE THEM. TELL THEM THE SIZE OF YOUR FRIDGE AND COMPRESSOR AND THEY SHOULD BE ABLE GIVE YOU THE RIGHT ONE. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE 3-N-1 AND CONNECT TO THE COMPRESSORS. BUT CONNECT THE TWO BLACK WIRES TO A EXTERNAL POWER(GET AN EXTENSION CORD AND CUT IT, WIRE NUT THE TWO WIRES TOGETHER). PLUG IT IN, IF THE COMPRESSOR KICKS OFF, YOU HAVE A BAD COMPRESSOR. IF IT RUNS WITHOUT KICKING OFF, THAT MEANS YOU ARE NOT GETTING POWER TO THE OVERLOAD RELAY TO TURN KICK ON COMPRESSOR. CHECK YOUR TEMP CONTROL INSIDE FRIDGE, AND THE DEFROST TIMER(MIGHT BE STUCK IN DEFROST)

Won't run continuosly.

The first thing that I would look at is the compressor relay. The relay gives extra windings in the motor, power to get the compressor up to speed. It is a small thing that carrys a heavy load. (MORE)

Defrosting freezer

There is a relay on the front of compressor called PTC relay. If you heard a clicking repeatedly take the relay off and get a new one. You will need the model number of your unit. I like using the 3 in 1 relay lot cheaper and real easy to install. If you want to get with me and I can email you through it.
