You have a ground not grounding could be the switch itself and it may be the voltage reducer to the coil.

SOURCE: need to replace 9n tractor starter

I suggest that you pull the starter and make sure the bendix unit isn't stuck on the shaft which may be rusted or dirty and corroded first. If the starter spins then the starter itself is probably okay. Hope this helps you

I can't read the number on my ford 9N there is a number on the generator that is 9N 10000 can you tell me approximately when my tractor was made

IF you can find the number but can't read it head-on, get a bright flashlite and shine it across the SN sideways close to the metal kind of glancing and see if it shows up.
The bad news is 9N designates a model between 1939-1942. No definite year is usually assigned to these Ford tractors.
Here's an article explaining it all. It's pretty interesting.

My 9N Ford Tractor won't start with a new 6volt battery.

No water in the distributor or wires ... right? Spray with a popular water inhibitor and/or dry with a rag and or air pressure.
