An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files.
For example, see: for a "no data - no charge guarantee".

Your drive can be showing 0GB for a few reasons, if it is showing 0GB in BIOS, in Device manager or in any hard drive utility chances are the PCB is shot or one of the heads has stopped reading. In either case you will need the help of a data recovery expert if you wish to retrieve your data. If it's showing 0GB in My Computer but shows as 160GB(~155) in a harddrive utility or under device manager you simply require a software solution. If you require a recommendation for the professional recovery route simply reply back letting me know and telling me what country and state/province you live in, I can get you in touch with an appropriate service. If you simply need a software solution reply back with the drives original OS, your current computers OS and I can recommend a software package that will allow you to recover your own data.

Simpletech external hard drive not workin on windows 7

Windows 7 seems to have a lot of issues with external hard drives and any usb attached devices
Click start control panel administrate tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

Automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in one box then select check now start then after its finished return and tick the other box you should not

do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive
i have found the best results ticking in one box the returning after it has finished then ticking the other box

it might take some time depending on the size of your disk but be patient

the next works on usb data / pen drives im not sure on external hard drives

Right click on your drive select properties then on customize restore Default in W 7

you might have to alternate doing this repeatedly until the problem is resolved

and i have found that leaving the a usb data drive plugged in and restarting my computer W7 my usb drive will work again (strange)
whatever works

hope it helps

I want to share my external hard drive files over a network so that I can access them from my laptop.

Right click on the external drive (from the computer it is connected to) and select "Properties." Once that box has popped up, select the "Sharing" tab. Configure your settings in this tab and hit apply.
On the laptop, right click on My Computer and select "Map Network Drive." Find the drive you just shared and follow the prompts as guided. Now, you can access all the files from the external drive on the laptop by going to My Computer.

Try recovering the lost or deleted date with a recovery program (recovermyfiles is one program). If this doesn't work, then you should reformat the drive, and then try the recovery software again. Keep me posted.

When i engage it to the computer it takes a long time to boot up, and a lot of my data is gone.

The boot time issue is a common thing. one method to help fix that is to go into bios and turn off any options to "boot from usb" or similar wording.

That should decrease the boot time that is caused by the system looking at your external drive and finding that it has system files on it. external drives with system files may mean th computer tries for some time to boot from that device before it gives up and moves on to the proper boot device eg your hard drive.

As for your data being lost you should run diagnostics on the drive to make sure there is no corruption.

Do this from windows explorer or my computer and RIGHT click the external drive then select properties

Now click hardware and highlight your external drive, then click properties, then policies. Make sure to turn of write cache and set it for QUICK REMOVAL.

Click tools then error checking and make sure any boxes that offer to fix anything are also ticked. Click ok and it should go off and do what it needs. It may want to restart to complete the process and this is OK

If it found anything really bad and came up with any error messages take a note of thee for further troubleshooting purposes.

ALSO NEVER just kill the power to the drive or computer.

Your data should now be a lot safer
