Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

We are with Shaw direct satelite for our tv's. Recently activated 3 older starchoice receivers. I have an older starchoice dish quad and I tried to hook up satelite at our trailer. I oriented the dish the same as the house. I changed LNB's (used) I tried different receivers and cables. I can only get 21 for a signal strenght. The trailer is only 10 km from my home. I live in Fort Erie Ontario

Hi, well you would think that setting up a sat system would be easy huh? Well as you have found out, it's NOT...
First you MUST ensure you have a Good antenna system 98% of ALL problems are to do with signal strength, or the lack of it...

The LNB, the COAX, and F connectors ALL must be in 100% A OK, condition I simply cannot stress this enough.
Very small adjustments can mean great increases in signal strength. What you need to do, is First get the antenna dish pointing exactly, not "near enough" as that will not work, it MUST be the exact Angle and Azimuth for the Sat you are "Looking at" it MUST be DEGREE accurate. To do this i suggest you obtain a little Sat strength meter, here, Use this to get your dish lined up correctly, also look up your settings for "Birds" angle and azimuth, this is SO important...

Now after you get a better signal, i think you will find it will all work. again make sure ALL connections are remade new afresh, Clean all contacts before using, make sure that your "F" Connectors are all NEW Tight and Connected well. Check the LNB, if possible test on a working system? Else just empirically test it, If possible use NEW low loss Coax, even a little water inside the coax will attenuate a weak signal.. Make sure you have the right LNB too, this is critical, as is the setting up too.

I have a Panasonic home theater and am looking for a code that will work with either a starchoice IRC 550 or shaw direct ir/rf 600 remote
This is the manual for the irc 550 ..and in the manual you have the codes for audio (cd ) which I believe to be the ones you need to use..They are on the end of the manual ..But ! If you read the manual carefully you see that it actually can pick-up the codes automatically if you follow certain programing procedure.described in the manual ..

Direct TV states "Not available" on screen.

When your Direct TV based units say that a channel is "not available" when you know that you had been receiving them on a regular basis you probably have a problem with the activation card. Sometimes the unit will lose it's communication with the satelite and it will not restore it when the signal reappears. This is probably a software issue but happens so rarely no one wants to fix it.

If all the other menus and parameters of the system appear to be working the problem probably lies with the activation card. For many reasons the card can become unusable and cause the system to not work. Generally though it is caused by a glitch in the software. As the unit continually reacquires the satelite or satelites, it must execute instructions just like your computer. We all know that computers are prone to failure so why not satelite dish receivers.

The solution involves removing the card then reinserting it and hitting the reset button near the card slot. This will cause the unit to reboot and re-acquire the satellite and all the programming. By forcing the unit to reboot it must read the information from the card and reload the software. Once reloaded the software will no longer have any glitches in it and should work as it is supposed to.

This should solve your problem. If it does not you may need to call your satelite provider.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating. Please consider a testimonial. Thank You.

How do you tune in tv channels when you only have a signal input from a satelite dish and no sky decoder. TV is a sharp lc-32l400x with built in freeview. Can we plug dish straight into TV aerial port...

You require a satelite decoder/receiver for your dish and an aerial for your TV.
The choice is yours. Plug a satelite receiver, for freesat, into the A/V input on the TV or have an aerial installed for freeview.

Onkyo TXSR507 can't control Starchoice

Actual, get rid of Starchoise.They will shut you down when using ANY receiver for video swithing. They think you are recording and they do an update check weekly and will shut you down so you have to call their tech support. I'm a custom home installer and come across this

Can i hook up to my satelite dish direct or do i have to go thru my receiver first. Thanks; Delmar

The satelite dish will not pass-through the video/audio from your DVD player. You will need to find an open area (preferably DVD selector) on your receiver to input the DVD video/audio. Most satelite boxes are one way devices.

Satelite box --> Receiver (satelite input)--> TV
DVD Player --> Receiver (DVD Player input) --> TV

Satelite box --> TV
DVD Player --> TV
