Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Open Question

I have a Murray 17hp OHV/42" Wide Body. The deck belt snapped from wear and tear but when i replaced it, the deck no longer drops down and engages. I am 99% sure i have the belt on correctly but do not understand why the deck no longer drops and the blades do not engage. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.

SOURCE: How do I adjust the brakes on a Murray 17hp 42

find your brake disc on your trans axle
find the 1/2 or 9/16 nut on the outside of the brake disc and turn it clockwise1/8 turn and retry your brakes 1/8 turn. at a time until you achieve adequate breaking
do not overtighten that nut as if you do you will not be able to move your mower in neutral after you let out on the brake /clutch

Will an older 42 inch murray riding lawn mower deck interchange with an older rally riding lawn mower deck ?

Mower decks are very specific to the tractor. Unless it was the same manufactured mower, and just branded differently, then not likely! Belts are your next problem as even an inch longer or shorter will cause problems.

Considering what you are paying for belts, I would very much suggest you schedule a repair at the shop. Less cost. Also, if it still snaps a belt right after they have had it in, they will replace it. Very odd, the clean snapping. Makes me wonder if there is a malformed surface contacting the belt intermittently. The belt is too loose on my 42" 17.5 Murray rider mower. Where can I find the adjustment?

Hi how old is your belt, if it is an original one or even a replacement with use go to your local repair shop and get a new belt --- take your old one so they match it up as well as your make--model---serial number of the mower. this will get you the right belt. you have a pulley that should take up the slack so I would look at the belt for streching and wear.

I need to replace a belt on a craftsman with a 42" deck.What size belt should I get.What length.

Craftsman is made by Murray Corp. who also makes Murry, YardMan, Lowes, Penncraft, and on and on. Go to your local Wal-Mart, Lawn and Garden Dept. and look for the belt that fits the Murray, YardMan, Lowes, Toro, 42" Deck 14-18 HP. Or take your old belt with you, and stretch them both end to end holding the end loops with each hand. Or you could go to Sears and just tell the parts department what your mower is and they can get you a Craftsman belt. It will be the same one you get at Lowe's, Wal-Mart, ect, probably just cost a little more. Sears doesn't make mowers, they just have their colors and names put on by the manufactorer. And Murray of Ohio is the maker of these.

Mowing deck pullies, mounting and spring application.

Download the product manual from the Sears website. Murray manufactured these tractors so you can download the manual from the Murray website also. Procedure for replacing the mower deck belt is quite simple. No need to remove the deck. Spring location also on diagrams. Mower deck parts diagram breaks down the whole assembly. Easier way to remove pulleys is using an impact wrench, otherwise hold the blade while removig the nut that holds the pulley in place. Use a heavy glove to hold the blade for safety!
