Question about Xantrex Technology Heart Freedom 20 12 Inverter

Open Question

My dad's Trace Engineering Legend Series 1 model L1512 inverter/charger overcharges the 4 coach 6 volt batteries when the coach is plugged into shore power. His coach is a 2000 model, and he has replaced batteries 4 times! He can't find his owners manual, and I couldn't find one online. Even with the batteries fully charged, I measured 14.6 volts being applied to them. I saw that later model inverters had a light that indicated whether the inverter/charger was in Bulk, Absorption, or Float mode, but I'm not sure if this model has that light indicator. The light is constantly glowing orange. Any ideas??

SOURCE: inverter won't charge

The problem is the batteries. 1) Check the age of them to assure they are not near warranty limit. If so change them. 2) They must be topped off. I recommend using distilled water within every 30-60 days. Summary: After doing item 2 above charge them with an external charger; while connected to inverter is ok. Does this help?

Terry this unit has 2 AC outputs so the reading that you got is correct. I am trying to surmise the actual problem that you have. You may have lost a system ground in the mobile home which would give you power as you stated but no power to the mobile home as the system ground has been lost.

Dumb questions time.

1. Battery voltage above 10 Volts?
2. Have you checked the DC Fuse?
3. Have you reset the breaker on the control panel?

Last test.. is to disconnect all outputs and try a voltage test again. A system distribution short will cause the inverter to go into the self protect mode.

The charger has four distinct charging stages - 1) Bulk, 2) Acceptance, 3) Float, and 4) Equalization. If your batteries are old and therefore won't reach full charge, the charger may not be able to get them up to the voltage where float charging kicks in. If you ever allowed the water in the batteries to get down to where the plates were exposed, one or more of your batteries may be contaminated with excessive sulfate buildup on the plates. The equalization process (Stage 4,which must be entered manually) will help to return any excessive sulfate builup back into solution, so you might try that and see if the performance improves.

Can't find the transfer switch, and could it go bad. Shore power and generator power works to the main panel box, but won't charge coach batteries


although it is possible to do separately most times the transfer switch is internal to the inverter , and the fact you mention that inverter is not charging batteries tells me your fault lay in the inverter all or part of it is not working , look at it carefully these have sometimes two reset breakers on there cases

If a normal install, the shore power and generator will go through a transfer switch then to the inverter. If when inverting 120 VAC circuits are OK, then the problem must be before the inverter. I would suspect that it is the transfer switch.

Disconnect shore power, make sure generator in NOT running then take a look at the transfer switch these are in a boat or RV but either can lead to vibration problems which can lead to loosening wire connections which can lead to heating and burning. It may be something as simple as a wire coming loose. (Which could be dangerous!)
Whether or not the contacts in the relays are OK, check and/or tighten all electrical connections. It's a good idea to check and tighten all electrical connections regularly.

Some transfer switches can be repaired by replacing just the relays. Other units (like mine this year!) will need to be replaced entirely.

Inverting side working fine but charger is not


I had a similar problem at work yesterday.when your charger switches of it assumes that the battery is fully charged, while it is not.this is the solution , switch on you inverter machine and allow it to run, while it is running use a direct current "dc" multi meter a test the voltages of the batteries any one that drops like 3 volts below the normal voltage is bad. Change it and you will notice that the problem will stop. Note that when a battery is bad it takes little time to get it charged than when it is in a good condition .

What kind of inverter is it and what kind of meter are you using to check the voltage with? If the inverter puts out modified sine wave, you have to use a true rms volt meter to accurately check the voltage with. A non rms volt meter will show a low reading.

My fredom 25 inverter is not running the refrigerator in my motor coach when I turn the generator off or unplug from shore power.


Is the inverter rated for more power than the refrigerator draws (watts). Does the coach 12 volt power drop (at the inverter) below 12 volts when the refrigerator comes on? If so, you may need to increase the wire size from the battery to the inverter. Make sure that the voltage doesn't drop at the battery. If so, it may need replacement or a larger capacity battery. When the battery is being charged, measure the voltage at the terminals (which are hopefully clean)--it should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts.

My tram 2512 is stuck in waiting for AC mode, ac is clearly reaching the unit, both by shore power and genset. What could the problem be?


If you are referring to a Trace 2412 inverter, which series is it? An SW or a DR series? In either case, if it won't accept generator power, but the AC input indicator is flashing, the problem is most likely the generator output power is off frequency or voltage. Trace inverters will only connect when the AC input is within certain limits. I'd suggest checking the frequency and voltage output of the generator. If it won't connect to shore power, check the voltage from that source. Make the voltage checks at the inverter input terminals.

More than likely you may a a relay that is stuck or not energizing which should switch the charging mode over automatically. Trace back from the generator to the charging circuit for the batteries. I'm not sure where the relay (or solinoid) would be located but you can be assured it is something in the charger sensing/switching circuit.
