I have a Kenmore microwave oven model number 721.80419500. Both over range light bulbs burned out. I went to Sears and got 2 new bulbs today, installed them, and they still won't work. What is wrong?

We see this a lot. The problem is almost certainly on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

this unit was produced by the Amana corporation for the Sears Kenmore brand, there are 2 different electrical schematic diagrams,i would first remove the top cover of the unit in question, then carefully discharge any residual voltages from the internal high voltage capacitor, then check for burned or poor connections on the control circuit board that lead to the lamps you just purchased and also the interlock switches where the door closes,if one of these is mis-adjusted the unit is not suppose to operate at all,but sometimes a mis- adjustment will allow certain operations to continue and others not to

Hello & Welcome to FixYa

The control board cannot go bad just because the bulbs are burned, first check the wiring harness for any burnt wires, if that's fine then it is the fuse that is bad and needs replacement. You can also check this parts picture to locate the fuse. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

The light went out an the turntable won't stop when I close the door...i tried to push clear, but it still turns. I couldn't find my model number on the below pull down, but my model is 721.8001...

721.80019401 (without spaces) is the correct model number.

If it was the cooktop lamp(s) that went out, I would suspect that it shorted, damaging the control circuit board.

We see and repair this problem on a regular basis with our $39.95 repair service.

Or you can order a new control circuit board (part number 6871W1S354A) for $75.80 from the Sears Parts Direct Web site.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so.

The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too.

Just enter your model number there.

A full Sears/Kenmore model number has 3 digits, a dot, then 8 more digits, such as ###.########.

you can check and see if there is a fuse on the microwave, if not it may have just burned out, its probably still under warranty so try to take it back for a replacement

The 5-digit number above is not a complete model number.

If you can post the full model number I can probably give you a link to the explode view, or you can find it here: http://www3.sears.com (the 3 is correct)

Manufacturers used to include access panels in the rear or side so you could easily change the bulb. That exposed the customer to 110V connectors, and that posed a real liability threat, so they stopped using them.

You now must generally remove the outer cover to replace the bulb.

In many over-the-range models, that can mean having to take the oven down from the wall! For safety's sake, that should be a two-person job and it's really helpful if you have your original installation instructions to do this.

Many models use one halogen lamp to illuminate the cooktop and another to illuminate the cavity. You must not touch them with your bare skin as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

The installation manual will cover that. If you don't have yours, you should be able to order it via Sears parts online: http://www3.sears.com/ You will need your full model number to look it up.
