Question about Kingston (DTIU3/2GB) 2 GB USB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Kingston 2 gb usb pan drive

I have the same problem, a Write Protection error.
I have edited the registry, that didn't work...
I have booted from my windows CD to delete the partition, that didn't work either. (Just thought it might work that way)
I also tried to format it in My Computer, command prompt and in Disk Management, neither of that was a success. I also changed the the drive letter, you can guess by now what happened....... I can't do anything with my 2GB Kingston USB drive... Not even de-frag it, not to mention to copy my DATA to some place else... If any one has any suggestions, I surely will give it a try!! Because if have tried anything and everything that I could possibly think of !

You need to reformat using the Kingston web site go there, they have a utility for such, also it should have had a small cd enclosed to do a setup.

USB drives can be write-protected by modifying the StoreageDevicePolicies Registry key and WriteProtect Registry value.
click Start>run>regedit to open Registry Editor. and press control+F to open the find dialogue box and type "usb device" or "driverdesc" to open usb mass storage device or type "usb mass storage device" in the search windows. And right click on it and delete. This will set the policy value to 0. then insert your usb device. It will work fine.
# Remember: do not delete any unknow files in the registry as this will make some programes not work as usual.

also
If you are running a Windows XP OS then you might be able to:
- click start right click on my computer select open
- Right click the icon of your Flash Drive (It should be F:/ or something)
- Click Properties in the menu that comes up
- Click the Sharing tab
- Click permissions
- And finally, click Allow next to Full Control.
hope this helps

I have 4gb kingston USB but it could not format. when i format it it show a massege " write protection error". please help me to format my USB. may u live long. Ch. Bashir Ahmad

Solutions:
• First of all try to locate a small switch (if any, that you may have not noticed) at some place on the drive or memory card reader. This is the prime reason for this error. If there is one, switch it to the other side to turn the protection off.
• Yes I know this problem is also occurring these days without this switch but not to worry. Just download this helpful software from http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool.shtml and run it to execute a "low-level format" on the drive. This software is quite handy and may take few attempts to actually remove the error.
• The problem can also be caused by some virus activity so just get it scanned by some updated good anti virus which may solve your problem.

If you do low level format, you may have to do a normal formatting after that. Just right click on the pen drive and select format. In the next screen accept the existing settings and click ok.

If these solutions doesn't work you have to edit registry settings. Find "StorageDevicePolicies" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\. There may be a DWORD "Write Protect. Set the value to "0". This ahould work.

Removing of write protected from kingston USB

is there a small switch on the side of the drive, which can be moved. its basically for write protection.

Otherwise its a problem with drive, and you need to format it. If that is not working then your drive has got corrupted and needs a replacement.
