I think that may be the answer..while I was waiting for an answer I did see something about "finalizing" the disc in the manual, a step that I do not recall completing...I hope that is it because the codec seems to be more complicated..I will try that and let you know if that works..thanks

Maybe you need to "Finalise" the DVD so that it will work on "Other' devices?.
Also make sure that the Video CODEC, is the same as the one your "Other" players use. As they MUST be all the same.
When you convert the video, it is "Saved" in a "Format" this "Format" is a CODEC, accordingly, the CODEC the DVD was saved in MUST be present IN the unit that is to be used to "Play" the DVD. say MPG4, AVI, VOB, etc.
below is a site that explains it all for you.

How to convert VCR to DVD

no easy way to do this unfortunately. You either need to connect your VCR to a DVD recorder and record it directly onto DVD or use a device such as this http://www.dx.com/p/easycap-usb-video-capture-adapter-5707 to connect your VCR to your computer and record it onto your computer that way.

Can i convert at PAL video with this machine?

The version of the ZV427MG9 sold in the U.S. only supports NTSC video files. Thus it won't play a PAL VHS tape.

If you find a similar version sold in Europe, that would probably play PAL videos. However, if you used the tape to DVD dubbing feature, the DVD would still have the PAL format. I'm not even sure that a video capture device with video conversion software on a computer would do what you want to do.

I wish that I had better news for you.

(The video would also matter. If you are trying to convert a commercial video (ex: a movie) to DVD, the dubbing feature doesn't work due to copy protection.)

Audio Problems playing VHS tapes with Denon AVR 1910

Did it EVER work as expected with VCR audio through the HDMI or are we working through that right now assuming it can?

I don't have a detailed manual, but the rear panel clearly shows some analog-only outputs (and NO digital ones) for the section called DVD/VCR. Internally, I'm sure there are proper analog-digital-converters for recording VHS to the native DVD-R, but VHS VCR's are NOT inherently digital audio devices so I'm pretty sure you need to run an analog RCA pair for the VHS video.

It sounds like the recorder will only record the dvd+ format, which does NOT need finalizing to play in other machines. ( you can record a dvd- , play it back on the machine you recorded it on, but need to finalize it to play on other machines)
The other units may only accept dvd-.(dvd- being the same format as you would buy or rent a film on)
One option, record the dvd on a dvd+rw (if possible) then copy to a dvd-r using your computer. The average use of a dvd+ is 1000 recordings.
There are many free disc burning suites available to download. Just google "free disc burning software" and take your pick.
I use 1 called "magix goya base" for copying disc to disc and "NTI" for burning to HDD and then to disc, if you only have use of 1 drive.

are you using a quality brand of dvd-r like memorex.

Also after making a recording you must finalize the disc you recorded so it will play on other players.
