Does the lawn mower have spark to plug or plugs ? Simple way to find out ia to remove spark plug & reattach wire to plug & hold elecrtode end up against engine block-(make sure you hold onto rubber or else could get a jolt)-and try to start again, should have spark, if not could be that flywheel strip-(magnet) is rusted over & cannot communicate w/coil to acheive spark. If this is the case simply sand the strip w/180 or 220 grit sandpaper & try again. If you have spark then you are probably not getting gas. Pull bottom scrw out of carb bowl & drain into a cup, check for debris. If gas comes out dirty will probably need to remove float bowl completly. Use care when removing & gasket can be re-used. Clean out float bowl & attachment screw-(has a hole in the bottom which feeds gas to engine) reassemble & try again. Hopefully this information helps.

Having trouble starting the lawnmower. When I turned it on its side to check the blade and turned it back it started. How can I solve this

Sounds like a odd solution.
After several years of working on small engines, I can tell you that 4 out of 5 times that a lawnmower doesn't start, it is a fuel delivery problem. Other issues could be a weak spark, low compression, or a clogged air filter.
If you have confirmed that the lawnmower has spark, checked the air filter, and can feel a good bit of compression, your problem likely lies in the carb.
The only way to solve this issue is to take it apart and clean it. Some models require that you replace components such as a fuel pump diaphragm. These are popular with Briggs engines.
The process is fairly detailed but you can use this guide to cleaning a lawnmower carb for detailed assistance. Good luck.

I have a lawnmower with a BSA 3.5 engine that I cannot start, the problem seems to be no spark at the spark plug. As I have never worked on a lawnmower I have no idea what generates the spark on...

Test for spark by placing a screwdriver into the spark plug wire and holding it close to a bolt on the engine. should see a spark (blue). If not, problem is likely the armature (coil). The coil is located under the engine shroud and held in place by two bolts. If you replace this part, (normally $30 to $40) you must ensure a proper air gap. Auto parts stores have inexpensive repair manuals to help.
