There is usually only one light on the drive, which indicates that data is being read or written when the light is light.

Hi dombarca...
Go to the website below and you can see the Specs for your laptop.
Yes you can use a larger HD to 120gb...
Just be sure the Storage controller type (HD) is IDE not SATA.
Please take time to rate me thumbs up

Seagate 120 gig HD in Dynex enclosure not recognized by XP system

Ok, you didn't say if the drive had data or not? Anyway, if it is a drive with no data etc, you will first need to Initialize, & Format the drive before use. Is there any way you can connect it up to an "Internal" or "External" SATA port, & "See" if the drive is recognized, then at least you know the drive is OK.. Also try another USB port if available. If you know it is OK, then go to device manager and Uninstall the entire USB layer, reboot, it will re-install the USB again, with default settings, it NOW may be "Seen".

WD 500 GB resized by Norton Ghost Restore to 120 GB and can not get it to original size.

You should partition your new drive first to say 160Gb (you lose a bit after formatting) for 1st partition and the remaining capacity for the 2nd partition. Because your Ghost image is 120Gb it can only restore to a partition of 120Gb, that is why it shows 120Gb on a 500Gb on a single partition.
You may be able to fix this problem without starting again by using Disk Manager (from Control Panel - Admoinistrative Tools) to create a 2nd partition on the hard drive and format this partition.

well with some usb hubs in the computer its self are provided enough power to handle a certain amount of data if you can get a hub with its own power supply or a appliance with a power supply minimizing the amount of power the main usb is having to supply this problem should be sorted
