Question about Lenovo 3000 N200 Notebook

No operating system on boot up - unable to fix MBR - refuse to believe hardware issue

Firstly, I made a clone using Acronis Home True Image 11 to an external USB hard drive (Maxtor 3200). After cloning completed (unattended) came back to machine with message "No operating system".
In short, local drive visible in bios, but with no partitions. Have attempted care and repair version 4 but as drive not visible, cannot fix MBR. Likewise cannot recover system and/or files as not local drive not being discovered correctly. I am running the utility rescue and recovery from the newly cloned external USB drive.
Have also downloaded Vista recovery image which uses Startup Repair ver 2 and run from this CD but get as shown below:
Problem Sig. 01  Startup Repair V2
            02  External Media
            03  6.0.6000.16386.0.0.0.0
            04  65537
            05  unknown
            06  CorruptPartitionTable
            07  0
            08  1
            09  FixPartitionTable
            10  1168
OS version       6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
I have raised a request with Lenovo, but cannot find a telephone contact number.
In addition, but not quite sure of impact, ny gathered system information states that I am running as a user which doesn't have administrator rights, but cannot fathom how I get the Rescue and Recovery to run as administrator.

I think your system has crashed so you need to do fresh operating system installation. You have mentioned that there is no partitions, it is sign of system's crash.

Can files be recovered from a failing hard drive?

Yes, files MAY be recovered from a failing hard drive, however the success depends on how badly the existing drive is functioning.

What I would suggest (if you are able to boot into windows) is to go to a command prompt by using the start menu , then in the RUN box type the letters 'CMD' and hit enter. In the box that appears next, type the following text: chkdsk /f /r <then press enter>.

The system will tell you that it cannot run the operation on the drive and ask if you want it to run on the next startup. Hit 'Y' then press enter.

The next time your machine is rebooted, the system will run a drive scan checking for errors on the drive and repair what it can.

That's step 1.

Next you want to get your data to a new drive, so you will need to put a new drive in your machine along side the existing drive. You will need to connect a power cable from the power supply wiring harness, and an SATA cable between the motherboard and hard drive. (You may need to go into the system setup in order to activate the second SATA port. You do this by pressing the appropriate key to enter Setup when the computer boots. F2 on the Optiplex.

Once you have the new hard drive in, you will need to use cloning software such as Acronis True Image. For this, since the drive you are cloning is probably a system drive, meaning you cannot clone it while you are booted into windows, you will need to create a bootable USB disk or CD/DVD, which can be used to boot to an alternate OS for the purpose of running the cloning software to clone the system drive while the system drive is not in use.

There is a free trial of acronis true image here: http://www.acronis.com/en-us/homecomputing/trueimage/gettrial/
and instructions for creating a bootable disk here: https://kb.acronis.com/content/44741

If you decide this is too much work, you should be able to have the same thing done at a local computer shop for around $150 plus the cost of a new drive. (I'd recommend a solid state drive as your new drive). You'll appreciate the performance boost and prices are now pretty reasonable.

Good luck!

Do I need a special software to duplicate a hard drive?

not necessarily, you could just systematically copy each folder from one place to another. This can get time consuming if there are a lot of folders that you want to copy so there are softwares out there that are designed to clone your hard drive.

I need acronis true image 11 home serial no

If you are installing a trial version of Acronis True Image Home 2011 or Acronis Disk Director 11 Home, you do not need a serial number.

If you have an OEM version of an Acronis product (e.g. preinstalled on your hard disk, notebook etc), please contact your OEM vendor for a serial key.

If you purchased your Acronis product online, then you should have received your serial number in an automatic E-mail that was sent to the E-mail address that you provided at the time of the purchase.

If you purchased your Acronis product offline at a retail store, then the location of the serial number depends on the package:
  • Boxed product, that consists of the CD, White CD Sleeve, Quick Start Guide. - The serial number sticker is affixed to the back of White CD Sleeve;
  • DVD Amaray Case, that consists of the CD and Quick Start Guide. - The serial number sticker is affixed inside the DVD case on right hand side. Directly above where the CD is held in place.
If you still cannot find your serial number, you can try contacting Acronis Customer Central here: http://www.acronis.com/support/index.html?ow=1

I can't get out of try and decide. When I tried

Acronis has an application that run before the OS called Acronis loader. It is posible it gets corrupt. Try the booting cd with acronis rescue media. Then Uninstall the boot loader. Ultimately, if you cannot do backup/restore from the computer, extract the hard drive, using and hard disk to USB adapter, do the nessesary operations on othe computer that you will hookup the hardrive.

XP running very slowly after resotring an Acronis drive image

I have seen Malfunctioning Norton Security software cause these exact symptoms many, many, many times. I would download the Norton removal tool from the symantec website and get rid of all the norton software and see if there is a drastic increase in performance. if so problem solved.

If however that is not the case you should run a Thorough scandisk (scan for bad sectors) since you said the old HDD was flakey, the cloned image can transfer file system damage that may have been present on the old drive and in some cases may worsen when transfered to a new drive. if you do find file system errors i recommend you bite the bullet and do a clean install and make sure to re partition, not just reformat.
