Desktop or laptop?
Most laptops will support an external monitor in addition to the main monitor.
Many desktop video cards support two monitors. What is the make and model.
An easy way to add additional monitors to any modern computer is to a USB based video interface.

Dell monitor has a green haze over the whole screen, and you can see the desktop background through every application on the monitor. This is a 2nd monitor to an Acer Aspire Laptop (which is not affected)

Get a hold of a PC desktop monitor and plug into the side video port. Start up the computer and if it happens with the external monitor, the problem is the video section on the motherboard, but if the same effect that happens with the LCD Screen on the Laptop and NOT with the Desktop monitor; the problem is the LCD screen on the laptop.

Connect your monitor to a different desktop or laptop, to see if the problem "moves" with the monitor.

Connect a different monitor to your computer, to see if the computer's video-card is causing the problem.

The backlight may have died. LCD monitors work by shining a light through the active diodes.

My monitor shuts down after one second.

Dell monitors automatically go into power-save mode after a preset amount of time when the computer is inactive. The Dell monitor will go completely black, instead of showing a screensaver. This doesn't mean that your Dell computermag-glass_10x10.gif has shut down. Instead, this allows your monitor to essentially turn off until it's needed again. You can change how long it is before the Dell monitor goes into power-save mode by changing your display settings.
  1. Step 1 Press any key on your keyboard or move your mouse. Either will turn off power-save mode. Alternately, you can press the power button on your Dell computer tower or laptop.
  2. Step 2 Press any key a second time if the monitor goes from power-save to stand-by mode. Stand-by mode allows the screensaver to appear.
  3. Step 3 Enter your user name and password into the login prompt if your computer requires a login. Press "Enter" to begin using your Dell computer.
  4. Step 4 Change the display settings on your Dell monitor to prevent your monitor from going into power-save mode prematurely. Right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose "Properties." Click the "Screensaver" tab and press "Power." Beside "Turn off Monitor," choose a time amount from the drop-down list and press "Apply."

If you have another monitor for desktop hook other monitor up then under hardware and software in control panel, add the dell monitor, then hook it up. Some operating systems need the driver to be added first. My brother almost threw away agood dell lcd monitor before I told him this, now he loves the lcd, works great.

You can hook up a standard monitor (15-pin vga cable) to the vga port on a laptop. Just go to your display settings (right click the desktop, properties, advanced tab) and set the proper settings there and you'll be good to go.
