Hi, I have a sony rear projection TV when i try to turn it on it clicks ,buzzes for a for seconds then goes into standby, i took the back off and the buzzing is coming from the ballast board, in particular a canister shaped component which also flickers/flashes purple while buzzing, do i need a new board or is the problem the lamp? thanks Si

That is correct that canister is the lamp, seems its trying to light, If you have not replaced the lamp since you purchased the unit then this is the perfect time to do so. This buzzing from the ballast is normal just means it has received signal to light the lamp. Just start by replacing the LAMP>>>

    Thanks for the reply techman007.

When i refered to the 'canister' shaped component i was refering to a small component on the ballast board itself, it looks like a short fat diode if you know what i mean, it is white in colour and it is this that is flickering/flashing purple when the buzzing occurs, like its arcing inside the component, sorry for not making thisclear but would this still suggest a replacement lamp is necassary or could it be the ballast board itself? I'm on a bit of a budget so would prefer not to have to replace the lamp then the board or vice-versa.

    Many thanks again techman007

This part is the spark gap if it sparks then it is a good indication that the lamp is faulty. But if it is a cansiter shaped it very well my be a bad capacitor, they tend to puffy on the top this indicates a leaky capaicitor, If you can take the part out of the unit by unsoldering it and get another one with the same value and voltage rating as othe old one, not the polarity on the cap also one end is neg and the other pos..

    Hi Techman007,
I'm sure the component is not a capacitor, and I will get a new lamp and hopefully this willresolve the problem.

Out of interest, I have uploaded a picture of a similar ballast board which has the same component i'm talking about, it is located at the bottom right of the board in the picture, above what looks like a resistor and below the brown box thing with the lamp leads coming out, it's white and has 2 blue/purple stripes and some blue writing i think between the stripes, I'm just curious now as to what it is if you have any idea?

    Thanks for the help.

techman007, ignore those replies, I see that component is called a sparkgap as you said and as it's sparking the balast is fine, I'm going to order a lamp from ebay unless you can recommend a cheap supplier?

Sony 57 inch WEGA Projection TV

Hi, this is a very common failure, you need to replace 2 IC chips on your power supply board, marked on the top of the IC`s is this number: MCZ3001D you can purchase them here if you are very proficient at soldering & un-soldering, and the board has to come out of the tv to do this, you might want to call a tv man for this one, but it will fix your set, happy holidays, BMW Rider
