Question about HP ScanJet 6100C Flatbed Scanner

Open Question

I was scanning text documents on an HP flatbed scanner (model Scanjet 3970) and doing OCR using Omnipage 14 on a PC clone, using Windows XP. It was working OK. Then I logged onto internet & HP apparently intervened and changed my settings. Now HP is controlling the Omnipage. A screen message actually says that HP is running Omnipage. Of course, this slows the operation and restricts my options. I wonder if it is using extra memory and processing resources. I hesitate to install Omnipage on another computer where I am still using FineReader 5.0 with an HP Deskjet F4140. I?m afraid HP will take over there, also. How can I keep HP from butting in where it?s not wanted? Thanks for your help.

SOURCE: Where is the Serial Number on my HP Scanjet 3970 Flatbed Scanner?

The 10 character serial number and the product number are located (on my 3970) on a sticker on the inside of the cover.

You can verify that you have the correct numbers if you enter them at

That will tell you if they are the wrong numbers as well as the warranty status of your scanner.

SOURCE: I can't find the Serial Number on my HP Scanjet 3970 Flatbed Scan

I see The Serial number the scanner needs is the registration number and that is usually found in the paper work you have or written on the cover of the CD I would leave the two versions on there because one should have updated the other one (see what happens when you put the number in)

SOURCE: fuse for hp 3970

After you have UnScrewed and Opened Up the Scanner.
On the Circuit Board (Green Board with Electronic Components) just where you Plug in the Power Pin there is a Small Glass Tube Looking Component.
You need to replace that with a 1.2mA Fuse.

Hope this Helps

Can the canoscan lide 70 scan documents to work so they can be edited? Is so how

Yes, but you have to use a special program called an "OCR" (Optical Character Recognizer) which will "read" the document from the scan. A scanner only produces a picture of a document, and it requries special software to "read" that image and make it editable.
The LIDE 70 comes with OMNIPAGE SE (special edition) which will work for simple documents. For more complex documents, you may need to buy the full edition of OMNIPAGE or another OCR package like FineReader. It is also built in fto software like OneNote and Evernote.

Did you go to Device Manager to check if driver is correctly installed ? If you see a yelllow triangle next to the " imaging devices " , go to it and delete ( not only uninstall ) driver .
Now disconnect scanner and go to the Control Pannel \ programs and delete the software . I preferably use a cleaning tool for this such as the free version of Revo Uninstaller from
Reboot . Do not connect scanner yet . Download and install correct and latest version of HP scanner's software from .
Reboot . Wait for Windows to be completely settled . Connect scanner and wait for confirmation of successfull instalation of driver .

Yes, OCR software takes a page of "printed" text, and tries to use image-processing techniques to
O(ptically) do C(haracter) R(ecognition) to extract the text, letter-by-letter, and to create a "text" document that you can "edit" on your computer.

Hello I have recently purchased a second-hand CanoScan LiDE 25 scanner and it was accompanied by OmniPage SE Software. The reason for this purchase was to scan research papers for a friend. My experience...

Don't use the OmniPage software for scanning. OmniPage is an OCR (optical character recognition) program and is trying to convert the scan into a document compatible with a text editor (such as Microsoft Word). Use a graphics editing program, and use the option to 'Import' or 'Acquire' an image. Make sure that the LiDE 25 is specified as the scanner, and you should be linked to the scanner interface. Now when the scan is complete, it will be transferred to the graphics editor as an image, not a document.
