Question about HP Pavilion A720N PC Desktop

1 Answer

Our HP Pavilion a720n shuts down randomly. I have defragged and run disk cleanup to see if this would help, but to no avail. It is was purchased on 10/22/2004. Would a new motherboard help? or is a replacement in order because of its age? Thank you, jab

Problems like these - intermittents - can be difficult to track down. I have found that many times, it is a heat related issue. You can check this fairly easily.

Disconnect all the cables from the PC. Label any that you may have trouble figuring out where to reconnect again later, when we're done. Remove the PC to a table and lay on its side, so that the left side faces up. Remove left side panel (its now facing up). Using the crevice tool attachment, carefully vacuum the inside on the case. Pay particular attention to the CPU and immediate area around it. Try to remove as much dust and dirt as possible. Try not to disturb the cabling inside the case very much while vacuuming all around the insides.

Look for the power supply unit. It has a large group of wires coming out going to different parts of the PC. This is a box in the rear corner of the PC. Vacuum the slots from inside the case and then from the outside of the case near the built in fan, too.

Next, inspect the CPU fan. Look for dust build up behind the fan on the cooling fins. If you wish, you can unscrew the fan from the cooling fins with a small phillips screw driver. and gently lift it away - don't drop the screws into the case! You should be able to vacuum the dust off the cooling fins easily now. When clean, reinstall the CPU fan. When satisfied with the cleaning job, reassemble and reconnect the computer to the cables and try it out.

Hopefully, your phantom shut downs will cease and it will run reliably. A couple last thoughts.. try to keep the PC on top of your desk, instead of on the floor where there is significantly more dirt and dust to get sucked into the computer and never blow dust out with compressed air inside the computer as this only forces the dirt and dust deeper into the components.

I hope this was very helpful - good luck!

Laptop very very slow to start up

If you have a virus program installed, it ismost likely is running a scan on your hard disk. It can slow down your computerespecially if you have a large hard drive.
To make your computer (hard disk) lean and mean, uninstall any programs you donot use.
Also you need to maintain your hard disk by running Disk Cleanup this willremove old temp files and old compressed files etc.
This will reduce the number of files the virus scanner has to scan. Plusrun Defrag. this makes your files contiguous so the system can access filesoff the hard drive quicker because it does not work as hard.Disk Cleanup and Defrag should carried out at leastonce a month.

My computer is running slow

When is the last time you used Disk Cleanup? You can find it on Windows under Start, than click Programs, than find Accessories, and than click on Disk Clean Up. It also helps to do Defragment your Hard Drive, you can find it under Accessories too..

My computer keeps shutting down randomly. Also when i try to use F10 it will not respond if i try and run error checking the system will crash/shut down or give me a black screen. Basicly it randomly...

1. overheating, and automatic shutdown.
Check that the fans are working.

2. bad RAM, causing "random" crashing.
On a "good" computer, download the free 'MEMTEST86+' software, and run it, to test your RAM.

3. Leaking capacitors on motherboard, causing "voltage-spikes", leading to "random" errors.

4. Bad disk-drive. Remove the disk-drive.
Connect it as a "slave" drive in another computer,
and run 'CHKDSK' ("Check Disk") to look for problems.

The first things o do is to run a disk cleanup and defrag. Both these tools are located in your start menu under accessories>system tools. Once you have this completed and reboot you should notice improved performance. Hope this helps.

Disk defragmenter

Does the disk need Defragmenting ??
if your concerned about having no-Backup device, i,d suggest either getting a DVD Writer, so that you can backup to DVD.
Or purchasing a memory card-reader with a 2-4 gig memory card, The other alternative, is to buy an external hard-drive.
Theres also a windows program, disk cleanup. which can help you cleanup unused files and folders.
Finally, you could re-install windows, or look for an alternative defragmenting program.
