ADJUST THE COLOR AND PRINT SPEED You may need to adjust the color and print speed. CHECK THE LEVEL OF INK IN THE PRINT CARTRIDGES 1 From the Finder desktop, double-click the Lexmark X5400 Series folder. 2 Double-click the Lexmark X5400 Series Utility icon. 3 From the Maintenance tab, check the ink levels of the cartridges. If an exclamation point (!) appears on a cartridge, the ink level is low. Install a new cartridge. Improving print quality These are possible solutions. Try one or more of the following: CHECK PAPER • Use the appropriate paper for the document. If you are printing photos or other high-quality images, for best results use Lexmark Photo Paper or Lexmark PerfectFinish Photo Paper. Do not use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper. Your print cartridges are not compatible with this type of paper. • Use a paper that is a heavier weight or bright white. CHECK PRINT CARTRIDGES If the document still does not have the print quality you want, follow these steps: 1 Align the print cartridges. For more information, see "Aligning print cartridges" on page. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 2. 2 Clean the print cartridge nozzles. For more information, see "Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles" . If print quality has not improved, continue to step 3. 3 Remove and reinsert the print cartridges. For more information, see "Removing a used print cartridge" on and "Installing print cartridges" . If print quality has not improved, continue to step 4. 4 Wipe the print nozzles and contacts. For more information, see "Wiping the print cartridge nozzles and contacts". Prints blotches and marks down the left edge

Hi
That sounds like classic wear and tear issues. All those rollers and gears have very close tolerances and any variation out of the rang and the paper grabing and jamming starts. And that could be cause of the toner leaking. You must have a lot of miles on that ol girl and you got your moneys worth out of her. They dont make them like that anymore and I dont think you could find the parts even though that was back when they supplied parts. I asked an engineer once "couldn't they make that one gear out of metal like the rest of them?" He replied "well sure, but there wouldn't be any money in that..." You beat the system on that one. Time to start your research on a replacement I'm afraid.

Black dots/blotches on the sides of printed sheets - whats is the cause and how t to fix it

If you have random blotches on both sides of the sheet, your printer probably needs cleaning, especially in the fuser section. If the fuser is difficult to get at, here's a good cheat developed for HP LaserJet 6 printers: Use a basic graphics program such as Microsoft Paint to draw three solid black rectangles about 2.5" top to bottom, going all the way across the paper (the space in between is not critical - the key is that you go as close to edge-to-edge as you can get). Print out this sheet.

Put the sheet back in the paper tray so it will print on the blank side (usually printed side up). Open up a quick text processor (Notepad in Windows). Type a single space, then print (some text editors won't print a document with no data in it). Dirt in the fuser will get stuck to the black areas on your cleaning sheet. Test your work by printing another copy of " ". Repeat with a new cleaning sheet if necessary.

Paper jams after first sheet prints. Tried adding more paper and then taking paper out. Nothing is working. No other sheets are jammed in the printer.

Poor quality paper can cause feed problems as the edge may be poorly sheared causing the sheets to stick together and often leaves fibers on the rollers which reduces their grip. Always 'fan' paper when replenishing to loosen the sheets.
Also, printers with heavy usage will occasionally needs the rubber pickup rollers cleaned. Don't use alcohol since this can dry out the rubbers surface complicating the problem. I have used naphtha to remove the built up paper fibers successfully.

Paper jams w/ all types of paper, Ink blotches...

If you're getting spots on the prints, run the Remove Ink Smears routine in the maintenance. It will clear the ink from the preheater. User packing tape to pull dust off of pick rollers. It's easy to unclip the unit and roll it on a piece of tape to remove dust.

Paper catch rollers out of alignment

Hi.
Try this
1.take a sheet of paper ,,fold it length wise 2-3 times to make it thick.insert this into the paper feed tray...move it left and right a couple of times..this clears the obstruction if any..
if this does not work..call lexmark tech support,,,your printer would be replaced if in warranty..
good luck

Try cleaning the feed rollers. these are the rubber wheels that actually contact the paper and pull it through. If they get dirty, their grip on the paper will be less than adequate. Just use some clean water, or perhaps some rubbing alcohol, and a clean rag to wipe them thoroughly.
