Question about Nikon Coolpix 5700 Digital Camera

Focus and rolling

Camera is 5/6 years old is a repair feasible? Switched on either get black and white rolling lines or image but attempt at close up results in complete white out. Not dropped. Is it possible to do anything? Worthwhile?

This may be a ccd problem as stated in the threads before.
Here is the Nikon link.

The age has nothing to do with it if it is still covered by Nikon's advisory. They will repair it, you will have to pay shipping to the repair facility.

Yes, it's a very common issue for your model camera. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

I have a small out of focus black spot on image on screen and prints , Nigel

You have a speck of dirt on the CCD image sensor.

There is no way to fix this without completely dismantling the camera and to do so is a very difficult job which is impossible without the correct tools and training. It's not like on a dDLR where the imager will definitely get dirty and is designed to be cleaned. The other issue is that your CCD is far smaller than on a dSLR and so cleaning attempts often end up making the problem worse as they're sensitive to far smaller dust particles than those which would trouble a dSLR.

Either learn to live with the problem and remove the spot with editing software or replace the camera. It's an unsupported three year old model and repairs outside of a warranty claim will be uneconomical.

Blank screen

Usually it's an lcd burn out where the screen needs replacement. Check the display button if it's just blank then press it to see if it comes on. As far as your friends white screen it not feasible to repair. A good thing to get on any digital equipment is an extended warranty. It does save you in the end when something goes wrong. The limited manufacture warranties are a joke. You should never rely on them.

For DSC-W17: The lens extended (normally I thought), but would not zoom. I shut it, and it was attempting to extract-retract, but shut with the lens rather extracted. Putting constant gentle pressure helped the lens to retract while shutting, even though it was attempting to extract again for 2-3 seconds.

Harder pressure however (about 1/2 kilo strength on wooden desk) made the lens totally unoperational... :(
