Video picture/audio

Hi
I have just installed VX6000 on my computer (XP) and at first It was fine although the picturer that my son received was not clear. this is the first problem.
After a short while we lost connection and neither picture or sound could be heard.
Firstly where do I find the preferences on the menu.
Also when trying to open the webcam icon on my desktop it said something like unabled in other words not working.
Please please help me
