Question about Western Digital Passport 320GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

2 Answers

My external hard drive fell a few days back, it's hardly 6 months old. I bought it from gulf and have it's warranty card and all other related papers. Now if i try to connect to any system, the software detects but else there is no drive shown or when clicks on the drive, a message comes indicating that there is no drive inserted. But if opens in the software installed systems it opens the software but the drive part is inactive. My question is that is it hard disk failure? can i get it's replacement? or get repaired? or at least can i get my data retrieved? Also it will be good if i get any details of service centers in kerala or in tamil nadu?

Most of the time, "self-inflicted" damage is EXCLUDED from W.D.'s "warranty" for the drive.
So, it depends on your sense of "ethics" whether to file a warranty-claim.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

> I have a new ... external hard-drive

If it is less than TWELVE MONTHS old, then its WARRANTY is still valid.

EXERCISE the warranty to get it repaired/replaced at _minimal_ cost to you.

A typical sound from a disk-drive that has malfunctioned.

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

No power to external harddrive

Yes, without a doubt!

I highly recommend sending it back for repairs or replacement. Most are covered under a 6 month warranty depending on the deal, and the country you are in as well. And computer shops don't generally fix things like External Drives, since they are not as a important part of a PC, but as a backup or storage device.

Good luck mate.

I had the same exact problem letter for letter except mine was a COMPAQ Presario F730US. I Bought an external 2.5 inch usb hard drive case and placed my hard drive from the laptop in it. I backed up all my files to my desktop making a mirror image of the hard drive. Then I wiped the Hard drive with wipe disk to destroy all my personal data and put the hard drive back in the laptop. I then sent it in for warranty repair for free. It took two weeks to get it back. I bought a new battey(12 cell) on ebay. Then I pulled the hard drive out of the now repaired laptop, put it back in the external usb case, formatted it NTSF and copied the mirror image of the drive back to it. I installed the hard drive back in the rejuvinated laptop, Installed the new battery, and powered it up. Fired up like it never happened. I did not lose 1 bit of data. The reason you make the mirror image with norton ghost is so you do not have to spend a month reinstalling all your apps and preferences. Follow these instructions to the letter and the result will be the same.
As you say you still under warranty get hoppin on this and it will only cost you 15 bucks for the external case and a new battery, which I recommend you get from ebay and not the manufacturer.(1/3 the price).

Hope this helps you,
George
