Question about Arris SURFboard SBG900 Wireless Router (DHSBG900)

XP laptop will not acquire network address after restarting. It works right after running the setup disk but will not work after a restart. Motorola-6FF0D modem/router connected to Windows 7 desktop. Have tried reinstall and IP release and renew. Continuously running "acquiring network address" but never does.

Physical causes and What to Do...

  • Network card could be faulty or malfunctioning, or the port on the card itself. Make sure lights show on the card and if they don't, replace with another one that works.
  • Check that your router or the server is turned on so that the laptop can acquire a valid IP address.
  • Double check to make sure the wireless card on the laptop is turned on. Do not assume it is on by default, do it yourself.

Logical or Software causes and solutions

Many of us are online buyers. Items sold on the internet, especially used items, are not in their default settings. Previous owners do not always reset them before sale, and this causes a lot of issues and unwanted beheaviours. Below are some of the common settings found on Routers:
  • ISP user name and password. If you want to connect to the internet check with your ISP to get your own User name and password, if not ignore this step.
  • Looking at the security options, make sure:
    • MAC address Filtering is not enable. If it is, remove all the MAC addresses on the MAC address table, and enter your Laptop's network card MAC address. With MAC Filtering On, do not forget to enter the MAC addresses of all you wireless devices on to its table.
    • Wireless key settings. Disable the wireless key settings and configure it to meet your requirements.



  • A Laptop to Laptop connection, please make sure the wireless settings on both laptops are the same.
  • Inconsistent wireless Keys. The key on the laptop has to match the one configured on the router.
  • Drivers out of date, update your wireless adapter drivers or your router firmware by checking the manufacturer web site.
  • Wireless not enable on the router. If wireless is not enable on the router, there is no Wi-Fi signal at all. some Router would have wireless turned off by default, and it is the administrator decision to use it or not.
  • DHCP Server misconfiguration. Make sure the DHCP (Dynamic Hosts Configuration) server is properly configured:
    • Enough IP address lease for your network devices
    • The server itself is not down

  • Some simple troubleshooting methods are:
    • Repair the connection. On Windows, click start - Control panel and then Network connections; chose the right connection icon, right then select repair. Windows will, temporarily, disable and re-enable your network adapter to attempt a connection.
    • Reset the IP stack. Click start then Run. At the command prompt type "command" or cmd for short, you are then presented with the command prompt window. Type "netsh int ip reset resetlog", and then restart your Laptop. This applies to desktop computers as well.
    • Reset the router to its factory default. Most routers we use at home are fitted with a reset button, by pressing and hold it for few seconds will bring the router to its factory default. This method solves a lot of the issues mentioned earlier, in one go.

    I have a Belkin wireless router model F5D7633AU4A and I show a Excellent signal.....but it will not Acquire a network address


    Do you mean your computer wil not acquire a network address from the router? If this is the case on your computer, click on start then click on run, in the run window type in cmd and press the enter key. You will now be in the windows doss prompt. Once in the doss prompt type in 'ipconfig /release' with quotes removed and press enter. After you do this type in 'ipconfig /renew' with quotes removed and press enter. After you do this restart the computer and see if it acquires the address. If this does not work try restarting the router. Keep me posted. If you found this solution helpful please rate it.     Can not connect to Verizon MiFi2200 wireless network


    Yes the verizon tech informed you right that the ip address will be acquired by your wireless adapter automatically. However there are lots of reason that your adapter not able to connect wireless.

    1. Make sure no firewall or antivirus is blocking your wireless connection to connect wirelessly.
    2. Make sure you are entering the right password for the wireless network if your network is secured.
    3. Make sure the wireless adapter driver installed properly.
    4. You can also try to restart the DHCP services through which your computer will try to get the ip address. I am giving you the steps how to restart the DHCP service once again.
    - Click on start
    - Under start search or under run type in services.msc
    - Search for DHCP client and right click on that and you can click on restart. It will restart your services.
    5. Make sure other computer are able to connect wirelessly to identify whether there is a problem with the router or a wireless adapter.
    6. Make sure the wireless channel on the router is correct sometime due to wireless channel your computer not connect.

    Brand new notebook .. windows then, screen freeze..acer picture


    This may require a "repair" of windows.

    Get a Windows XP Operating system disk with the correct service pack that the notebook has installed (usually XP SP2).

    1. Boot from it (put it in CD drive and restart the laptop).

    2. If you still get the same problem start up, you need to set the laptop to boot from CD.

    3. Restart laptop, press Delete key or F2, or F12 (it should say one of these on the screen) to enter the Setup. or another key to get "boot options"

    4. In Setup (BIOS) Use Right Arrow to find the Boot Options. Use the instructions to move the CD-ROM to first position, above HDD (hard drive). Press Esc, then F10 to save your changes and exit.

    5. The XP CD Rom should now run. It should come to a screen where you are asked to press R to repair windows.

    6. When it comes to the command prompt, restart the laptop

    Hopefully the laptop should boot OK again.

    No connectivty to internet


    Your problem is very indicative of an assigned ip address to your wireless card. Assuming you have windows xp as your operating system. Go to start, run, type in CMD, once the dos screen appears type ipconfig and look to see what your assigned ip address is.

    Cannot connet my laptop to he wireless router


    If compuetr always saying acquiring network address you can try firt restarting the computer, but if still wont get a valid ip address, you need to adjust the wireless settings of the router and after that try to reconnect to the wireless network....

    Acquiring Address Problem


    you will need to make sure that DHCP is enabled within the routers settings as this will tell the router to assign ip addresses automatically, then go to network connections, right click on your network card>properties>TCP/IP line>properties and tick 'obtain an ip address automatically', click ok, close window and restart pc.

    Linksys can't find ip address


    TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 & Vista.

    For XP, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

    For Vista, Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

    Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

    Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

    Reboot the machine.

    Help!


    go to start>run, then type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter. If no luck then go to control panel>network connections, then click on your network adapter sometimes called local area connection unless it's wireless and right click>properties, click on the tcp/ip line and click properties and check the obtain ip address is ticked and select ok. Try again and if that doesnt work go back to network connections, right click on your network connection and select uninstal, then restart the notebook and it will reinstall itself for you to try again.
