Sounds like hopefully just the record tab has been removed from the vhs tape itself. It is located on the back, left side of the tape. Where you normally put the labels. If its not there then there will be a roughly half inch square opening. Theres supposed to be a tab there to allow recording and if you dont want to accidentally record you remove the tab.
If you have a store bought movie they already have the tab removed and you can compare it with a blank tape and you will see the difference.

If the tab is there, then it will be the internal switch inside the vcr that rarely but probably will be bad. You can try cleaning it with say a q-tip and alcohol. I could not locate one to purchase if it is bad. You might have to buy another vcr. Parts are extremely hard to get on vcr's because of price of new ones.
Hopefully its just the record tab. Thanks and good luck

MY RCA VCR - TIMER LIGHT ALWAYS FLASHES. WHEN i TRY TO RECORD OR TURN OFF VCR IT EJECTS TAPE.

If it plays a tape OK, then it could be that you have a timer set. In which case clear it! Or that you are using a blank tape where the slot at the back is open. If you are using a blank tape which is good and it still ejects the tape after setting the recording. Then it's likely the recording tab sensor - that detects the slot at the back of the tape - is either bent or broken.

Lost manual. Cannot get HR A591U JVC VCR program to record a future cable tv program. Seems I have tried everything but it does not record as I set up. It will record an existing show by pressing...

Timer Recording JVC VCR HR A591U
Timer recording can be programmed on-screen with
the remote control. The built-in timer allows automatic
unattended recording of up to 8 programs within 1
month.

EXAMPLE: Program a timer recording for the 26th day,
channel 125 (CATV), 11:00 - 11:30 PM on timer program
number 1 (Tape speed: EP).

When a TV is connected with an audio/video cable, turn the
TV and this VCR on and select the video input mode on the
TV.

• After timer recording is completed, the VCR turns off
automatically.
• You can program the timer recording while a regular
recording is in progress; the menu screens will not be
recorded.
• The timer recording will start at 20 seconds before the time
you predetermined.

Press MENU on the Remote.
Check the “TIMER REC SET”
option is selected, then press
ENTER.

Press SET –/+ to select one of
the program lines, then press
ENTER.

Press SET –/+ to select the
date, then press ENTER.

Set the start time, end time,
channel and tape speed as in
step 3.
NOTE: To record from external
source, press SET –/+
and set the channel to
"L". "L" will appear next
to CH 125 (or 69).

To enter other programs,
repeat step 2 through 4. Or,
press MENU twice to return
to the normal screen.

Press TIMER on the Remote.
The power will go off, the
TIMER REC indicator ( ) will
light and the VCR stands by
for recording.

To cancel a program:

Press the SET –/+ to select the
“TIMER REC SET” option in the
MENU. Then press SET –/+ to
select the unnecessary program,
and press CANCEL to cancel the
program.

VCR not timer recording, VCR will not turn on with timer

If no menu, unplug, and let it set a few minutes. Replug and the on-screen menu should appear. Reset the set-up (date, etc). I had the same experience as one of the other posters with JVC customer service telling me the menu button on the remote was malfunctioning, and I should purchase a new remote from them.
After you input your programming, be sure to hit the Timer button on your remote. If you want to change tapes or playback, you will need to hit the Timer button again (take it off Timer) for access to your VCR. Be sure to reset it to Timer afterwards, or you will not be able to record.

Toshiba M674 Lost Remote can't change tape speed

Is this an older VCR? If you can set the timer on the VCR itself
like on an older model you can set the timer and set it to record
in another speed. But if you can't do this. You are stuck at
recording in sp. If you can set the timer, if you make just
one mistake it may not come on at all. That's why vcrs
are not as reliable as dvrs. if you don't want to miss a show
diffinatly make sure you re at home and see it come on
like fill up the whole tape and put the show on the end of the tape. like a 2 hour movie comes on a 8pm-10pm set the
timer at ep speed to come on at 4:05pm- 10:05pm and put a 2 hour tape in it. in ep it will record for 6 hours. tape will stop
automatically so you will record it, and it will be on the tape
at the end. that's the way i do it. if I'm not going to be at home
if i really don't want to miss a show at all. because when you set the timer it still might not come on if you see it on you know
its going to record it.
note its cheaper to just buy a new vcr than buying a $72 remote.
you might as well do that if it is a newer model.

I bought an older model vcr in a thrift store for $10 and it worked good for a year for recording shows. I got lucky I guess.
it didn't have a remote I use the timer to set the ep speed
to record.
